There’s nothing quite as exciting for a Cub Scout as building and racing their pinewood derby car, but building it at the Asbury Millwork Shop takes the cake. Greenwich’s Pack 10 Wolf Den (second graders) gathered at Asbury Moulding & Millwork in Stamford to design, cut, sand and even paint their custom pinewood derby cars. Parents were happy to help their sons build the cars at a location that offered a variety of professional and high-powered tools and lots of space for the 10 participating boys.
Asbury Moulding & Millwork owner Michael Simko offered to host the event at the Asbury Shop. The pinewood derby car kits only contain a block of wood, four wheels and four nails (axles), so the Scouts and their parents were able to put several professional tools to use, including band saws, belt sanders, oscillating sanders and a drill press for the car axles. “The reason it’s so nice having a workshop to go to is because I’m not sure how else we would have even carved the blocks out,” said Jeff Messina, the adult Den leader and parent to a participating Cub Scout. “Having it at Asbury Moulding & Millwork made it possible for more Scouts to be involved and craft their own cars, which ends up being more fun for everyone.”
