The Greenwich High School gymnasium is going to need a new banner.

For the first time in school history, the Greenwich gymnastics team claimed Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference gold, winning the class L meet in commanding fashion.

“This is wonderful,” GHS head coach Sue Knight said. “I am so happy for the girls. They put in so much hard work and I am just really happy for them.”

Big Red finished the meet, held at Pomperaug High School, with a team score of 140.425, which was just under six points ahead of Southington High School, which took second overall with 134.450 points.

“I am very proud of my whole team,” Kelsey Fedorko said. “This is a big accomplishment because we never won states before and it’s amazing for everyone here. I am just so excited. We needed to be focused and stick everything like we did in practices. We did all that today.”

Glastonbury High School grabbed the bronze and took home a score of 132.950. Fellow FCIAC school Trumbull High School netted fourth on the day, posting a score of 131.800.

Claiming the class L title came two week removed from Big Red winning the FCIAC championship meet for the first since the 1982 season.

“I am very proud of these girls because they’ve been consistent from day one,” Knight said. “Some times in big championship meets like this, the girls could get a little nervous. But these girls rocked it today. They were solid and nothing bothered them.”

“I never thought we could be undefeated, win FCIACs and come here and get a state title,” GHS standout gymnast Adnerys DeJesus said. “This is an unbelievable feeling. I am so proud of all these girls because we worked so hard for this.”

Leading the way for Greenwich was DeJesus, as she pulled in another breathtaking performance.

“This is really overwhelming,” DeJesus said. “I am just so happy for the team. This is our first state title and I am just glad that I was able to contribute to the team score and get us to win FCIACs and states as well.”

On vault, she grabbed a score of 9.700 and backed that up with a 9.600 on bars. During the beam, DeJesus netted a total of 9.550 and she saved her best for the floor exercise, grabbing a top score of 9.725.

“I think that controlling my nerves and anxiety really helped because I was really nervous for today,” DeJesus said. “I knew that we had to come out big and strong in order to get this title. I am glad that I was able to contain all my feelings and do good.”

All her scores were the tops in every event.

“She was wonderful,” Knight said. “You just love watching her. She does a wonderful job every time and puts in all out there. I am so happy for her to continue her great season.”

Not to be outdone was Fedorko. On the beam, her score of 9.250 was second best on the entire day and the same goes for floor exercise, as she posted a score of 9.300. On the vault, Fedorko’s score of 9.075 was good enough for a tie at second with Trumbull’s Natalie Smerling.

On bars, Fedorko took home a score of 8.400.

“I am very happy that we are undefeated right now,” Fedorko said. “I hope we can keep this rolling during the next few meets coming up.”

In addition to DeJesus and Fedorko, the Cardinals had other solid performances.

Fiona Brock had her best score on the beam, posting a score of 8.600. She also fared well on the vault and bars, scoring a 8.100 on vault and 7.900 on bars.

“This is amazing,” Brock said. “We haven’t won states in Greenwich history, so it’s amazing to be a part of the first team to ever win states. I think I had a really good beam day and basically I had a good day overall. We work really hard and are dedicated to the sport. We support each other and push each other to be the best we can be.”

Her twin sister, Aisling Brock also had a great championship meet. On the floor, Aisling Brock had a score of 8.525. She also competed on the beam and took home a score of 8.075.

“We just worked so hard for this and it’s so great that we won states,” Aisling Brock said. “We’ve never done that before and we weren’t sure that we could do this today, but after winning FCIACs we were really pumped and excited to come here.”

Rounding out the scoring for Greenwich High School was Gianna Cardini as she competed in three events on the day. Her best was on vault, where she grabbed a score of 8.450. Competing on floor, Cardini netted a score of 8.175 and ended her bars routine with a score of 8.000.

“We saw a lot of really good teams here today and it was really nerve-racking, but we worked really hard and we pulled through,” Aisling Brock said.

Knight said that the strength of the entire team was key to Big Red’s first state title.

“We had depth today and we used it,” Knight said. “I think we did really well on the beam today. They stuck their routines and the pressure of a big time meet didn’t bother them. Actually, every one looked great today. They put in a lot of effort and stayed focus. I am just so happy for the girls. They are the ones that put in the hard work for years.”
