Heading into the FAA conference tournament, the Greenwich Academy basketball team was challenged with sticking to the script and capturing a first-round home game in the postseason tournament.

They did just that Monday afternoon when they defeated King School 49-28 to move on to the semifinals.

“We’ve talked about how important it was to get this first game at home and you got to give credit to them,” said GA head coach Wes Matthews. “They followed the script. We played a tough up and coming team in King and I knew John would have them ready. I give my girls the credit of picking this week to really fine tune themselves and pay attention to detail.”

The fourth-seeded Gators would set the pace early and were led by Kaitlyn Davis who scored a game-high 20 points, Brooke Powers who added 12 points and Olivia Davis who pitched in 10 points with her point guard duties.

Greenwich Academy never trailed in the game thanks to the defensive efforts of Phoebe Morris, Cora Creighton and the Davis twins.

“I think we played alright on the offensive end,” said Kaitlyn Davis. “I still think we could have played better, but a win is a win and I’ll take that tonight.”

The Gators led the Vikings 27-11 at the half as the Davis twins, both freshman, accounted for more than half of the team’s offensive output.

“Kaitlyn is a joy to watch and a joy to coach,” said GA head coach Wes Matthews. “She gets everyone involved and she makes everyone better. She lets Brooke Powers be an excellent shooter and she makes her sister, Olivia, a better ball handler. Her presence is priceless.”

For King, Natalie Wind and Colby Lopez-Balboa both scored eight points in the loss.

With the victory, the Gators advance to play the second-seeded Hamden Hall in the semifinals and would play the winner of St. Luke’s and Hopkins if they are to advance to the FAA finals.
