It is no surprise that Greenwich resident Skylar Cluett would enjoy photography. She is the daughter of well-known fashion, advertising and portraiture photographer David Cluett. Skylar grew up attending photo shoots and accumulating many photo-albums from her family’s extensive travel.
Skylar, a senior at The Gunnery School in Washington, Conn., has decided to pursue a career in photography by looking at colleges with a strong reputation in photo-journalism and investigative reporting.
At The Gunnery as a senior, Skylar has more flexibility in her class choices. She is using that to her advantage, taking Psychology and AP Studio Art this year. “I am also beginning to put myself out there and take risks,” Skylar says. “I did not enter the After School Art Program’s Celebration of Young Photographers Competition last year, but this year I am entering my favorite photos. These photos are part of my AP Portfolio, “Shadows and Reflections.”
When asked about how her love of art has blossomed at The Gunnery, Skylar said, “I have had so much support in Technique in Artistry from Andrew Richards, The Gunnery’s Visual Arts Chair.” “My roommates are also interested in film and photography so we are always feeding off each other and sharing ideas.” Last year, Skylar experimented with the Go-Pro cameras to make a film about her crew team, which The Gunnery published on its YouTube page. “I enjoyed my experience with The Gunnery Crew team; I learned to work on a team and enjoyed being on the water,” she says. “But this year, I needed to concentrate on my photography.”
