Greenwich Athletes Help Greens Farm Start Winter Strong

The winter season has kicked off for several schools and Greenwich residents have helped Greens Farms Academy start strong.

Boys varsity fencing

In boys fencing, GFA lost to Rye Country Day School 11-16, while the GFA foil squad won 5-4. Helping the Dragons was freshman Matt Jackmauh (Old Greenwich), who was starting for the first time, went 0-2.

Sophomore Teddy Gartland (Darien) went undefeated, finishing 3-0. Senior Philip Nicopoulos (Wilton) finished 2-1. Freshman Willem Schuddeboom (Darien) competed for the first time, finishing 0-1. Epee also had a narrow win, 5-4. Senior captain Ryan Petschek, (Norwalk) finished 2-1. Senior Alex McKenna (Stamford) went 2-1, while junior Luke Duffy (Wilton) went 1-2.

The boys saber struggled against a strong RCDS saber team. Junior Will Whitman (Stamford) and freshman Alex Galik (Darien) both went 0-3. Galik started for the first time in his fencing career, scoring his first point in a fencing match. Senior Matthew Litchtenberg (Stamford) won 5-3.

Girls varsity basketball

Against The Westover School, GFA jumped out to an early lead behind a quick shot from Marcus and two free throws by junior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk). From there, the teams went back and forth. Despite a one-point deficit going in to halftime, GFA rallied for the win. Marcus finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Kimball walked out with a game-high 34 points, seven steals, five rebounds and five assists. Greenwich resident and GFA freshman Kelly Van Hoesen had seven steals.

Boys varsity basketball

The Dragons opened their 2015-16 season with a win over Chase Collegiate School of Waterbury, 67-52. Helping the cause was Greenwich resident and senior Issac Manton, who scored 17 points and led all rebounders with eight. He also matched junior Elvin Rodriguez (New York, N.Y.) with a game-high six assists.

Rodriguez led scoring with 21 points and six assists, while senior Dom Cristiano (Valhalla, N.Y.) scored 15, including two deep three-pointers. He also added seven rebounds. Sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) had 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Bennett Close, also from Norwalk, had seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Junior Mack Muller (Westport) had five rebounds, three steals, three assists and a blocked shot. Team captain senior Pat Seegers (Stamford) led the defense, pulled down six rebounds, made two steals and two assists. Junior Jacob Manton (Greenwich) and junior Matt Smith (Purchase, N.Y.) also contributed on defense.

On Saturday, the Dragons lost to FAA rival Hamden Hall 68-80. GFA started well leading into the second quarter, but foul trouble proved to be their undoing. Rodriguez scored 23, rebounded five and assisted on three. Cristiano scored 14 and rebounded eight, while Isaac Manton scored 12 and stole four.

Junior Evan Roteman came back from a hand injury to score eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Senior Chile Larraguibel (Greenwich) scored seven and rebounded five, while Holzinger had six rebounds and Mack had four rebounds and two assists.
