Library Introduces Lecture Series On Shakespeare’s Comedies

shakespeare-masks-fi

Greenwich Library’s new Shakespeare series with Dr. Mark J. Schenker continues on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium.

In this series, Dr. Schenker will examine and discuss three of Shakespeare’s comedies with Greenwich Library patrons. Between Romeo and Juliet (1595-96) and Othello (1604) – each with its pair of doomed lovers – Shakespeare wrote three masterpieces of comedy in which the course of love ends well even if it does not run smoothly: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night.

In his lecture-discussions Dr. Schenker will consider such topics as, the comic view of life, the transformative power of love and art, and the ways in which Shakespeare employs theater as symbol and metaphor.

Mark J. Schenker has been at Yale College since 1990. He is currently a senior associate dean of the College and dean of academic affairs. He has lectured on literature and film for over 25 years and has led book discussion series in more than 100 venues in Connecticut.
