On Nov. 21 and 22 the Greenwich Symphony will present soprano Halley Gilbert singing Joseph Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne (Songs of the Auvergne) in a program that will include Haydn’s Symphony No. 86 and Brahms’s Symphony No.4. Ms. Gilbert won the 2011 Jenny Lind Competition and was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2009.

Canteloube was born in 1879 in the Auvergne region of France and loved its particular culture, language and folk music . Early in the 20th century Canteloube traveled and documented the songs on a tape recorder. His Chants d’Auvergne is a collection of the folk songs arranged for soprano and piano or orchestra, consisting of five series of songs. For this performance the soloist and orchestra will present the five songs of Series 1, sung in Occitan, the local language of the region.

The concerts will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. at the new performance space at Greenwich High School, 10 Hillside Road. A free, pre-concert lecture will be given one hour before each performance. Tickets are $35 for adults, $10 for students.
