Greens Farms Academy had success during a very competitive playoff season and some Greenwich kids helped make that happen.

For the No. 3 seeded Dragons’ girls soccer team in the Fairchester Athletic Association tournament, they hosted No. 6 seeded Masters School in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs last Monday.

Old Greenwich junior Alexis Messina found the back of the net in the team’s 5-3 victory. Also scoring for GFA were freshman Sophie Staeger (Westport), freshman Ella Murphy (Darien) and two goals from junior Clare Mengel (Fairfield).

Then on Wednesday the girls faced St. Luke’s in the FAA semifinal match up. While GFA dominated the majority of the game, St. Luke’s came away with the 2-0 victory.

Saturday the Lady Dragons played their final game of the regular season against Miss Porters School, walking away with a 1-1 tie. The Dragons scored their goal of the game early in the second half off a long pass from Mengel which eventually found the head of senior captain Erin Reilly (Fairfield) who knocked the ball in goal. Eighth-grader Ryan Boyle (Southport) played behind the team in net, coming away with numerous saves.

GFA begins the New England Tournament Wednesday, where they will face Marianapolis Prep.

On the boys soccer side of the ball, the Greens Farms Academy varsity team won twice during the week to capture their first FAA tournament championship. GFA defeated Masters 5-2 on Wednesday in the semifinals, moving on to defeat Rye Country Day School 1-0 in the finals Saturday.

Against Masters, senior Matt Allen (Fairfield) had two goals, senior captain Ben Strait (Stamford) had a goal and an assist, as did senior captain Charlie Mounts (Westport). Fellow senior Stephen Gallagher (Fairfield) added a goal while sophomore Ian Lee (Greenwich) tallied an assist to round off the scoring for GFA. Sophomore goaltender Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) stopped 9 shots.

In Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rye Country Day School Strait drew a crucial foul with 15 minutes left in a scoreless game. Mounts took the resulting free kick and found Allen for the goal.  Holzinger had 13 saves for the shutout.
