Local Crew Teams Take to Head of the Charles Regatta

The 51st Annual Head of the Charles Regatta was held in Beantown on Oct. 17 and a handful of Greenwich athletes made their presence felt during the highly-prestigious event.

Nobody had a better day than the Brunswick School Men’s Youth-4 boat, as the school took home a medal for the first time.

The Brunswick School Men’s Youth-4 boat that consisted of William Bass, William Powers, Thomas Kern, Alex Kutner and coxswain Alec Esmond finished the Head of the Charles third overall, posting a time of 17:25.037 and were just over two seconds away from Nobles, who grabbed the silver.

Another top 20 boat during the regatta came from Greenwich Crew, as their Women’s Youth-8 boat finished 17th overall with a time of 18:03.075. The lineup on that boat was Clara Chambers, Molly Lesser, Abby Lehman, Laura Navarette, Alex Lee, Amanda Pyne, Isabelle Lyers, Daisy Devore and coxswain Leeloo Gilet.

During the women’s race of the Youth-4 event, the Greenwich Crew team of Isabel Rose, Maeve Markowitz, Ellie Dabney, Maxine McMillian and coxswain Lindsey Devore finished 24th overall out of 85 boats, crossing the finish line with a time of 20:25.491.

Greenwich Crew just got past ZLAC, who finished 25th overall with a time of 20:25.797 and Squamscott, who finished 26th with a time of 20:25.817.

Greenwich had two boats finish in the Men’s Youth Doubles event. Brunswick School entered the top 50, as the duo of Matthew Womble and Andreas Kern netted a time of 21:01.475 and that was good enough for 45th on the day.

Not to be outdone in the event was Greenwich Crew, as they finished 50th overall when James Smith and Alexander Woo crossed the finish line with a time of 21:37.604.

Again, Greenwich Crew battled in the Men’s Youth-8 event and yet again took another top 40 finish. The team of Cole Korzendorfer, Derek Woo, Daniel Papes, Jack McDonough, Jonathan Katzman, Caleb Edmundson, Alexander Hatzis, Eric Lee and Jimmy C finished 36th overall out of 85 boats and netted a time of 16:19.381.

They were just over a second away from cracking the top 35 and beating Whitman Crew, who finished with a time of 16:18.230,

Another boat from Greenwich finished in the top 75 at the Head of the Charles.

Competing in the Women’s Youth-8 event, the Convent of the Sacred Heart team of Maria Barbosa, Kaitlin Edwardson, Perry Barth, Agatha Ryan, Alexandra Dimitri, Maeve Hogan, Tess Driscoll, Catherine Kulowiec and coxswain Catherine Eagan took home 72nd on the day, finishing up with a time of 19:54.742.

They edged out Shenendehowa, who ended the event 73rd with a time of 19:55.352.

Brunswick’s Chris Bass also competed in the Men’s Youth Singles and took home 30th on the day, ending the event with a time of 22:52.343.
