The Greenwich High School seniors came through when it mattered most during Thursday’s Senior Night game against Danbury High School, as they scored all three goals and upended the Hatters 3-0.

“The seniors have been great,” Greenwich High School head coach Danny Simpson said. “It’s been a honor to coach them and what they have given to the program has been fantastic. Just like the seniors before them, they are going away and grace Greenwich High School with whatever college they go to with pride.”

Leading the way for Big Red was senior Anna Giannuzzi, who finished with the game with two of the three goals scored. Her first goal was scored in the 10th minutes and the second was scored four minutes later. Katie Gallagher assisted on the first goal and Kim Kockenmeister helped out with the second goal.

“Our midfielders were doing a great job today playing the ball forward,” Giannuzzi said. “Moving back and forth made it easy to break down their defense. It was great to do this on senior night. It was a wonderful to be playing on this team as a senior with all the great players, but it’s going to be really sad to leave when it’s over.”

In addition to Giannuzzi, Big Red picked up a goal from fellow senior Treloara Harrisson, who picked up the pass from Emily Berzolla and fired the ball in the back of the net.

“It felt really well to get the win, especiall on our senior night,” Harrisson said. “I scored a couple of goals this season, but this one today really means a lot. I have been playing four years on varsity and senior night has always been a part of, but it’s never been my night. It’s awesome to be able to score on this night.”

With the win, Greenwich upped its overall record to 8-2-2 and currently sits third in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

“I felt bad for Danbury because they had some injuries coming in here,” Simpson said. “But we had a lot of focus in this game and we were really strong today. We really took the game to them. We were passing and moving and had three good finishes. We were on the front foot and the girls didn’t lose focus because it was senior night. They went out and played and that’s a credit to them. They are a mature bunch and took care of business.”

While the victory was big in terms of the team’s playoff standings, it was important because of senior night, as seniors Harrisson and Giannuzzi, along with Jessica Bartholomew, Berzolla, Caroline Coen, Katherine Doyle, Claire Eschricht, Caroline Frey, Meaghan Grund and Kathryn Harford were honored by players, coaches, family and fans.

“The past few years we’ve played Danbury and they’ve been a really good team,” Giannuzzi said. “They took away our senior night two years ago, so going into this tonight we were determined to get that back. It’s a really good feeling. the win was important, not just because it was senior night, but also we are really competitive in the FCIAC this year.We want to be in a good position going into playoffs.”

On Saturday, Big Red will host Fairfield Ludlowe High School at 11 a.m. and then travel to Brien McMahon Tuesday night.
