Gary C. Wood Sr., known as Woody, a longtime resident of Greenwich before retiring to Florida, died at Lake City Hospital there on the evening of Monday, Sept. 14, with his wife by his side.
Gary was born Oct. 2, 1942, one of eight children born to the late Kenneth and Florence (Weaver) Wood. Gary grew up in Stamford and attended Stamford public schools.
Gary’s passion for mechanics started at a very young age. He loved fixing people’s mechanical problems. His passion for mechanics and fixing cars led him to bigger issues, trucks and heavy equipment. He would work all though the night, if necessary, to get a truck up and running for its morning run. He knew how important it was for independent truckers and heavy equipment owners to have their equipment working well, and his clients appreciated his diligence and hard work.
Gary was a member of the Teamsters and employed by Arnold Bakery in Greenwich and Marshall’s Express in Stamford before retiring to Florida on medical disability.
He was a good-hearted person, always helping others. Those who knew Gary say he was fun to be around, and that once you met him, you would never forget him and he would never forget you. He knew everyone in the neighborhood by name and will be truly missed.
Gary is survived by his wife, Shirley, and sons, Gary Jr., of Stamford, Jeffery (Jennifer) of Virginia, and daughters Kristin and Kimberly of Stamford. Gary has three grandchildren. He was formerly married to Dolores Gattuso of Greenwich. He is also survived by two brothers: Barry Wood (Debra) of Greenwich, Donald Wood of Montana, and two sisters; Theodora (Wood) DeLeo and Cynthia (Wood) Spiers, of Florida.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth W. Jr., Gerald C., and Richard A. Wood. Donations can be made to: kidneyfund.org.
