The Greenwich-based Calf Island Conservancy (CIC) announces that its annual Fall Spruce-Up of Calf Island will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a rain date of Saturday, Oct. 10. The Conservancy works in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. All volunteers are welcome to assist in maintaining trails, removing invasive species, and picking up debris, especially along the shore, while enjoying the natural setting.
Volunteers and attendees will board a boat, courtesy of Beacon Point Marina, at the Grass Island Public Dock (entrance off of Shore Road in the Belle Haven area of Greenwich) at 9 a.m. and will leave Calf Island at noon. Bring work gloves, water, and work clothing.
The dock on Calf Island sustained damage during a storm in 2010. Consequently, the boat to Calf Island may have to run up on the beach, and volunteers and visitors should be prepared to climb over the bow into shallow water to disembark.
To volunteer for the Spruce-Up it is important to contact Nancy Dickinson of the Calf Island Conservancy in advance of the clean-up date at constancy@aol.com. All volunteers must sign a waiver unless they already have one on file with CIC.
Calf Island Conservancy, Inc., a non-profit group, works in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to promote conservation, stewardship, and environmental education of Calf Island, a 32-acre island located off the coast of Greenwich. To become a member of the Calf Island Conservancy, please send a check for $25 to cover annual dues to Calf Island Conservancy, PO Box 5031, Greenwich CT 06831. Cash donations are also appreciated.
