The Brunswick soccer team upped its overall record to 3-0 on the season with a 2-1 victory over Deerfield Academy Saturday afternoon.

The game was a hard fought battle against a tough Deerfield team that played with intensity throughout the match. All of the goals in the game were scored in the first half.

Brunswick struck first at the 15th minute mark. After sustaining possession in Deerfield’s final third, Nate Stuart crossed the ball for a one-time finish from Nick Desalvo.

The second Brunswick goal came only a minute later, when James Sands fed a ball to Sal Lopez . Lopez then got in behind the Deerfield defenders to finish past Deerfield Academy keeper Tim Gerber.

Deerfield Academy was not going down without a fight. Nigel Andrews pulled back a goal at the 20th minute with a solo effort, getting past the Brunswick defenders and beating Bruins’ goalie Will Salomon with an upper 90 blast to make the score 2-1.

After the halftime break and several tactical adjustments, Brunswick circulated the ball successfully for long stretches of the second half, creating scoring chances but not being able to break through. Deerfield rallied late in the game to get a few chances of their own.

With two minutes left in the game, the Bruins were called for a foul 25 yards out in a wide area. Deerfield served the ball into the packed penalty area and connected with a shot on goal, but was denied by a diving reaction save from Salomon.

The Bruins outshot Deerfield 15-10 and had the advantage in corner kicks 4-3.
