The Greenwich volunteer community was brought together Thursday evening for the YWCA’s annual Spirit of Greenwich Awards.
“The Spirit of Greenwich Awards is one of the ways that we empower women. We recognize the empowerment of women,” said President and CEO Adrianne Singer.
“It really is given to people who have spent their whole life doing volunteer work,” said 2015 honoree Leah Leidy Marmon.
These organizations include the American Red Cross, the Junior League of Greenwich, and the United Way.
“We are really a volunteer community. Everything is run by volunteers from the government on down,” said Singer.
The nine women honored this year are considered true leaders who have made a real difference in their line of volunteer work.
“I’m in awe. We all think that so many of our co-workers deserve it just as much as we do,” said Marmon.
Honoree Leah Leidy Marmon says everyone should volunteer, especially young people.
“It gives them a sense of worth, but ti also teaches them what other people’s live’s are like and what other people’s needs are so they are not so self centered,” said Marmon.
“This si our way of thanking the volunteers in the community,” said Singer.
