Police Warn of Scammers

The Greenwich Police Department is warning citizens about scammers selling magazine subscriptions with intent to raise money for charity. However, the money isn’t for charity at all, as the GPD arrested one person after saying they were raising money for Graceful Hands, but failed to produce a permit to solicit or tax identification.

Lt. Kraig Gray says that often someone will knock door-to-door without the right requirements for selling magazines or other items.

“Legitimate sales people will have the right paperwork,” Gray said. “If someone is trying to sell something to you without proper permits and ID, contact the Greenwich Police.”

Gray added that if sellers are at your doorstep, asking to see the correct permits and identification could prevent potential scams.

A permit is not needed for those knocking on doors for religious or political reasons.

The GPD stresses to be careful of who you let in and around your home as well.

Friday, a Greenwich woman was a victim of a distraction burglary after a man and a woman worked together to steal cash and jewelry.

After convincing the 97-year-old that they were part of a fence company, one occupied the woman outside the house while the other went around the back of the residence to steal thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and cash.

The two suspects are both around 30-years-old according to police.

“Residents have to be cautious of anyone coming to your door unannounced,” Lt. Gray said. “Especially strangers.”
