Greenwich Police Holding a Drug Take Back Day

Looking to get rid of prescription pills you haven’t used? The Greenwich Police Department is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Administration for a drug take back day at headquarters this Saturday from 10:00  a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The police and DEA will accept unused prescription pills and patches, but cannot take liquids or needle sharps.

Officials say this is free, anonymous, and helps with public safety.

“Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs,” said Sgt. John Thorme. “Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.”

The Police Department reports that last October, Americans countrywide turned in 324 tons of prescription pills. More information can be found here.
