Silent Suffering: The Unseen Crisis of Severe Mental Illness Support in Our Communities

A star athlete, a genius mathematician, a producer, a world-renowned photographer, a brother who was the smartest person in the room, a son who just graduated with honors – Severe mental Illness can develop (and have) in any of these people. There is a serious need for education and understanding of adults who suffer from a severe mental illness. While studies of mental illness are constantly evolving, one area that is known is that valued socialization and relationships have proven to be of great importance when it comes to recovery from a serious mental illness (3).

Pathways offers several levels of housing programs to support clients needing varying degrees of support. Our services extend to clients living independently in our community with support services. Attaining this level of independence is a measure of success for our clients and the result of the compassionate work Pathways staff provides.

Upon taking the helm as Executive Director of Pathways in November of 2021, I began to assess the condition of client living spaces with an eye toward refreshing personal spaces and bringing better functionality and serenity to our client’s bedrooms and common living space. We engaged our clients into selecting serene wall colors to create a more tranquil setting. Color is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions

The plight of the mentally ill has grown during and post pandemic and those afflicted are often left to fend for themselves and wind up homeless, incarcerated or sadly die due to neglect. Pathways provides a safe-haven for these vulnerable people to receive the tender loving care they deserve, to build the skills that support independence, to grow meaningful friendships, community connections, and person-centered pathways to recovery
