SUMMARY:(De)Construct
DESCRIPTION:(De)Construct\, March 7 – April 24\, 2024 \nThe Flinn Gallery is pleased to present (De)Construct\, featuring the work of artists Linda Lindroth\, Ryan Sarah Murphy and Keiko Narahashi. Through their respective mediums of photography\, assemblage and clay modelling\, these artists probe the boundaries between representation and abstraction\, flatness and depth\, materiality and illusion\, perception and meaning. \nThe artistic process starts with a utilitarian or ancillary item of little value\, such as a cardboard box\, piece of crockery or discarded consumer packaging. This artifact is then purposefully and methodically deconstructed\, deflated\, unfolded or flattened. Thus\, voided of its original function\, it is decontextualized and reduced to a state of pure abstract objecthood. What differentiates a throw-away object from an art object? It is up to the viewer to complete the work by imbuing it with their own emotional response and meaning. De(Construct) has been curated by Kirsten Pitts and Isabelle Schiavi. The exhibition runs for seven weeks from March 7 to April 24\, 2024\, with an opening reception on Thursday\, March 7th from 6 to 8pm. \nLinda Lindroth has been making and exhibiting her photography-based work since the early seventies. The large photographs exhibited at the Flinn are from her “Flatland” series begun in 2011. With these pieces she deconstructs the tattered consumer packaging of the early to mid-twentieth century. She starts with small cardboard containers that she disassembles\, flattens and photographs\, displaying the resulting photo at a greatly enlarged scale which abstracts the original object\, rendering it almost unrecognizable. Lindroth’s photographs bring to mind the planar surfaces of Modernism and large-scale color field paintings of Abstract Expressionism\, prevalent styles at the time Lindroth began her artistic practice. But a closer look reveals subtle shadows\, folds and gestural marks which add depth\, texture and dimension to her imagery. In addition\, by including the occasional figurative element or real-world cultural reference\, Lindroth flouts her predecessors’ orthodoxy of pure abstraction. Born in Florida\, she has lived and worked in New Haven\, CT for the last four decades. \nRyan Sarah Murphy’s cardboard relief sculptures and hanging wall pieces are generated from urban detritus\, discarded pieces of cardboard packaging which she reclaims from the street. Initially drawn to these materials because of their color\, she strips them of any identifiable markings such as logos or lettering\, then cuts up and layers the pieces creating three dimensional geometric constructions that recall architectural sections or technical drawings. She creates vibrant color compositions\, never re-painting or altering the original colors of the found items. She says\, “Materials have always been my point of entry when it comes to creating something. I trust that the material contains within it whatever it is I’m meant to communicate or express…My process is mostly an exercise in getting out of the way as much as possible and letting the material take over…” Murphy’s body of work also includes drawings and multi-layered video works using her own geometric renderings that she alters\, collages and abstracts both by hand and with Adobe computer software. These dynamic works recall animated perspective layouts\, exploding wireframe grids or rapidly mutating binary codes. The artist was born in Vermont and lives and works in NYC. \nKeiko Narahashi’s works are constructed through an elaborate process. Originating as ink drawings suggesting the shapes of traditional pottery\, urns and other functional receptacles\, they are given to a potter who uses them to model three dimensional forms on a wheel. Narahashi then takes the wet pottery and draws it out\, cuts it up and/or flattens it with a rolling pin. The flatness renders the objects unusable and mostly unrecognizable\, although vestiges of their former incarnation remain\, giving them a strange and haunting inner quality. Occasionally a primitive human fragment such as a body\, face or hand is the subject of this process of reductive transformation. When grouped together they bring to mind surreal landscapes\, anime scenery\, playgrounds for the imagination. With their solid primary colors or simply painted black\, the works seem to inhabit a universal\, as well as an uncanny\, cartoon-like realm of existence. Keiko Narahashi was born in Japan and grew up in North Carolina. She currently lives and works in NYC. \nEVENTS:\nOpening reception: Thursday\, March 7th from 6-8pm \nArtist Talk: Sunday\, April 14th at 2pm \nThe Flinn Gallery\, celebrating its 95th season\, is sponsored by Friends of Greenwich Library. It is located on the second floor of the library at 101 West Putnam Avenue\, Greenwich\, CT. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm\, Thursday 10am-8pm\, and Sunday 1-5pm.

SUMMARY:The Needs of Plants & How to Satisfy Them Ecologically
DESCRIPTION:In the sixth workshop of our Ecological Landscapes series\, we will list the needs of plants: sunlight\, nutrients\, moisture and soil characteristics. \nout on the Audubon property\, we will observe the functioning of the nutrient cycle by which soil organisms convert dead plant material into humus (compost)\, the perfect plant food that produces the luxurious growth of plants in the natural world. We will collect samples to take to the classroom to study the ecology of the soil with both the unaided eye and under the microscope\, we will learn by observation the structure of a healthy soil and how these soil organisms create it. \nIn the classroom\, we will learn the characteristics of a healthy soil structure and why it is critical for successfully growing plants ecologically. We will learn why compost (humus) is essential for creating and maintaining soil fertility and structure. We will learn how to introduce the natural processes of nutrient recycling into our gardens and landscapes to create and maintain an ecologically healthy soil. \nPresenters: Jim Carr is educated as a biologist. He was an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden for twenty years\, teaching a variety of horticultural subjects\, always from an ecological perspective. He developed the NYBG program of ecological gardening and landscaping for the School of Professional Horticulture as well as one for home gardeners. \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity of participants and will contain both an indoor portion and outdoor garden demonstration. \nTickets MUST be purchased in advance through our online ticket sales page. There will be no ticket sales at the door the day of the program. Please be prepared to show proof of your ticket registration\, either as a printed copy of your registration receipt or your registration confirmation email on your phone. \nWorkshop Fee: $25 per person \nRegistration is required. \nRecommended for ages 12 and up. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. The rate for children and adults is the same. \nUpon arriving please check in at our front desk and proceed to Kiernan Hall. \nThe second portion of this program will be outside in our demonstration garden so please come prepared with waterproof shoes/boots and weather appropriate clothing for gardening. \nPhoto: Ryan MacLean

SUMMARY:Uncovering the True History of the Black Community in the Paper City
DESCRIPTION:What is history? And who gets to tell it? What stories are documented? Why? Within traditional frameworks history is viewed as past events that have been validated through research. \nMuch of the history of Holyoke\, Mass.\, known as the Paper City\, has been white-washed\, focusing largely on the narratives of city founders\, and more recently\, of Puerto Rican migration and culture. The history of the Black community has often been excluded. Erika Slocumb of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center will discuss how oral histories and archival documents are uncovering the history of Black Holyoke through Black perspectives.

SUMMARY:New Exhibit: Mapping the Invisible
DESCRIPTION:The Flinn Gallery in Greenwich Connecticut is pleased to present Mapping the Invisible\, featuring artists Laura Battle\, Jaq Belcher and Amy Myers. All three artists are inspired by engagement with the wonders and mysteries found in concepts of mathematics and scientific theory. Their use of geometry and repetitive mark-making in divergent mediums result in varied and intriguing explorations of universal energetic patterns\, both visible and imagined. \nLaura Battle\, an artist whose practice ranges from intricate graphite drawings to large scale oil paintings\, has been a tenured professor of art at Bard College for the last 3 decades and is an alumna of Yale University. Inspired by the patterns of nature such as the ebb and flow of water or the circling sweep of swallows\, as well as ancient diagrams of the universe and ways of measuring time\, Battle’s intricate geometries and sensitively rendered colors lead viewers into a world of heightened order and emotive energy. Her art explores the relationship between structured design and spontaneous creation; each piece\, some with upwards of 4000 lines\, offer exciting optical effects and unexpected compositions that become charged spaces suggesting a visceral and universally relatable visual language. \nJaq Belcher\, a New York-based artist originally from Melbourne\, Australia\, uses pristine white or black paper in her intricately executed dimensional work. Originally a sculptor working in metal\, Belcher embraced the qualities of paper’s simplicity and ecology when she moved to New York in 2001. Her work is grounded in a process of reduction and repetition influenced by Eastern and Western contemplative traditions. Using nothing more than an X-acto knife and handmade stencils\, Belcher crafts mesmerizing patterns based on the “vesica piscis\,” a seed-like petal shape\, rich in historic\, symbolic and energetic associations. Her meticulous attention to detail and mastery of paper manipulation result in works that shimmer with reflected light and shadow. As part of the exhibit\, a temporary installation of excised “seeds” of paper will form a mandala on the floor referencing the continuous cycle and transformation of matter and energy. \nAmy Myers is a New York based artist and Texas-native who trained at the Kansas City Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Influenced by an interest in the implications of ideas such as quantum mechanics and string theory\, and sensitive to the emotive properties of color\, her mixed-media drawings and paintings evolve as poetic imaginings and intuitive explorations of theories related to ideas as small as the atom and as big as the birth of galaxies. Through graphite\, ink\, gouache\, conte and oil paint\, Myers portrays abstract yet nearly symmetrical figures that blur the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical\, inviting viewers to engage with the layered details and the sense of vibration and spinning energy they portray. Myers’ works have found homes in prestigious collections including the Guggenheim Museum and the Laguna Art Museum. \nThe exhibit is co-curated by Francene Langford and Caren Winnall and will run from Thursday May 2\, 2024 to Wednesday June 20\, 2024 at the Flinn Gallery\, located within the Greenwich Library. Join us for an opening reception on May 2nd from 6-8 pm\, where guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists and delve deeper into their creative processes. \nEVENTS:\nOpening reception: Thursday\, May 2nd from 6-8pm \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, June 1\, 2pm.\nThe Flinn Gallery\, celebrating its 95th season\, is sponsored by Friends of Greenwich Library. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Mapping the Invisible at the Flinn Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Flinn Gallery is excited to host the opening reception for Mapping the Invisible on Thursday\, May 2nd\, from 6 – 8pm. The show features the work of artists Laura Battle\, Jaq Belcher and Amy Myers. All three artists are inspired by engagement with the wonders and mysteries found in concepts of mathematics and scientific theory. Their use of geometry and repetitive mark-making in divergent mediums result in varied and intriguing explorations of universal energetic patterns\, both visible and imagined. Mapping the Invisible runs from May 2nd to June 19th\, and is curated by Francine Langford and Caren Winnall.
