SUMMARY:Kenji Nakahashi: Strange Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Best known for his conceptual and street photography\, Kenji Nakahashi (Japanese\, 1947–2017) produced a highly experimental body of work grounded in the everyday. Playful and intellectually rigorous\, his photographs highlight the pleasures of ordinary life\, from subway encounters and skyscrapers silhouetted against the sky to such mundane objects as eggs\, pencils\, and analogue clocks. Yet Nakahashi often destabilized his subjects by placing them in unexpected\, even surreal contexts\, resulting in images that surprise\, challenge\, and delight. Seen through the eyes of this extraordinary artist\, the more than thirty photographs on display invite the viewer into the strange beauty of Nakahashi’s world.

SUMMARY:Bruce Presents: Alaskan Dinosaurs: New Discoveries from an Ancient Arctic Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, hundreds of bird species migrate to the Arctic to nest and raise their young\, benefitting from seasonally abundant food resources and up to six months of continuous summer daylight. They are essential members of their ecosystems\, aiding in crucial tasks like pollination and seed dispersal and insect and small mammal population control. But work by paleontologists at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has made the surprising revelation that this behavior isn’t new- birds and non-avian dinosaurs have been nesting in Alaska for nearly 73 million years! Fossils from Alaska’s North Slope represent one of the best collections of baby dinosaur material in the world and research has revealed that they wouldn’t be old enough to migrate to lower latitudes before winter\, so they endured months of frigid temperatures\, snowfall\, and continuous winter darkness. The birds and their hatchlings may have been able to fly in time\, but it still would have been no easy feat to migrate to more equable conditions mere months after hatching. And just as it wouldn’t have been easy to be a dinosaur or bird living in this Cretaceous ecosystem\, it isn’t easy for us to collect their fossils either! In the summer\, we are faced with cold and rainy days\, mud\, and mosquitoes. In the winter\, we deal with deep snow\, temperatures down to -50 degrees Fahrenheit\, and limited daylight. It’s worth it though\, as polar dinosaur fossils are some of the rarest on the planet and are challenging our perception of dinosaur physiology and behavior by providing new and exciting insights into ancient Arctic ecosystems. \nJoin us for an event reception at 6-6:30 pm. \nSupport for Bruce Presents is generously provided by Berkley One\, a Berkley Company. \nSpace is limited. Online registration required.

SUMMARY:Biophilia
DESCRIPTION:The Flinn Gallery is pleased to present Biophilia\, an exhibition featuring the work of six women artists: Carol Bouyoucos\, Loren Eiferman\, Julie Evans\, Heide Follin\, Christina Massey\, and Sui Park. Curated by Ellen Hawley\, the show explores the concept of biophilia\, a term coined by Harvard naturalist Dr. Edward O. Wilson\, referring to humanity’s intrinsic affinity for nature and life. \nDrawing inspiration from both real and imagined aspects of the natural world\, these artists explore the intersection of nature\, imagination\, and technology. Their diverse practices reflect personal connections to the environment\, sustainability\, and the fragility of life. Their works are expressed through a dynamic range of 2D and 3D materials\, textures\, and colors. Using a range of materials and techniques—from traditional painting to upcycled sculptures—they offer unique perspectives on ecological responsibility and the evolving relationship between humans and the Earth. \nCarol Bouyoucos\, for example\, combines photography and digital tools to create vibrant\, surreal landscapes that evoke nature while incorporating technological intervention. Loren Eiferman takes a different approach\, transforming discarded wood into intricate sculptures inspired by mythical 15th century plant references from The Voynich Manuscript\, while weaving in a conversation about ecological healing with her series Nature Will Heal. \nJulie Evans’ earthy ceramic sculptures\, with their organic shapes and textures\, also seek to bridge the familiar and the unfamiliar that evolve from her background as a painter. Only recently\, she recently began making ceramic sculpture. \nSimilarly\, Heide Follin’s layered botanical imagery on canvas\, fabric\, or wood panels\, reflects her interest in ecosystems and their unseen\, energetic connections. The vibrancy and texture of her abstract compositions capture the energy of growing things\, evoking both their beauty and complexity. A quote reads: “My interests in eco-systems include the examinations of things that grow; their energies\, gestures\, movements\, entanglements\, textures and personalities.” \nChristina Massey’s uses repurposed aluminum cans to create colorful\, abstract works that merge painting\, sculpture\, and sustainability\, incorporating glass blown elements she recently learned to create. The otherworldly\, colorful abstractions she creates live somewhere between that of painting and sculpture\, craft and fine art\, process based and conceptual. \nLastly\, Sui Park manipulates industrial materials like plastic zip ties to form dynamic\, biomorphic sculptures that reflect nature’s subtle transformations. They are non–durable\, disposable\, trivial\, inexpensive and easily consumed materials. Park writes\, “I often find these moments from nature.\nI think nature allows us to pause and find things that have been overlooked and are inspiring. Through these forms\, I attempt to express seemingly static yet dynamic characteristics of our evolving lives. While they resemble transitions and transformations of nature\, the forms are to capture subtle but continuous changes in our emotions\, sentiments\, memories and expectations.” \nBiophilia invites viewers to pause and reconsider their relationship with the natural world\, offering reimagined life forms and reinterpreted landscapes through the artists’ unique visions. \nEvents: \nOpening reception: Thursday\, March 13\, 2025\, from 6-8pm\nArtist Talk: March 30\, 2 pm \nMonday\, April 7\, 2 – 4pm\, Innovation Lab\nInnovation Lab project creating a 3D printed lamp \nFriday\, April 11\, 7pm\, Berkley Theater\nFriends Friday Film\, Minari \nBiophilia is curated by Flinn Gallery committee member Ellen Hawley. The Flinn Gallery is a non-profit organization sponsored by the Friends of Greenwich Library and is located on the second floor of the Library at 101 Putnam Avenue\, Greenwich\, CT. The Gallery welcomes visitors daily Mon. to Sat.\, 10am-5pm\, Thurs. until 8pm\, and Sun. 1-5pm. For more information or high-res images\, please contact us.

SUMMARY:Bird Feeder-Watch Fridays at Greenwich Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Spend a leisurely afternoon watching and counting birds from Greenwich Audubon’s bird feeder window!\nThe winter months are the perfect time to become acquainted with our resident songbirds. Come join us for this recurring program on Friday afternoons where Audubon Naturalist Ryan MacLean will point out the species of birds coming to our Learning Center’s bird feeder station and provide tips on both identifying and feeding them. \nWe’ll also share how to participate in Project FeederWatch—a winter-long community science survey of the birds that visit feeders in your backyards\, parks\, offices\, and other areas. You and your family can participate by counting the birds you see in your backyard and submitting them to the Project FeederWatch website. We will provide identification guides to backyard birds and information on how you can take part in Project FeederWatch and even submit a checklist of our own at the end of the program! \nAll ages are welcome including children after school and senior citizens. Our building is ADA accessible so wheelchairs and mobility devices can be used. \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity and will be held indoors. \nRegistration is FREE but tickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. The rate for children and adults is the same. \nUpon arrival please check in at the front desk and proceed to our Learning Center bird feeder window. \nFor questions\, please contact Ryan MacLean at Ryan.MacLean@audubon.org or 203-930-1353 \nPhoto: Carolina Wren + Downy Woodpecker.
