GRT: Date with an Author: Issac Bailey, author of My Brother Moochie

Date with An Author is pleased to welcome author and award-winning journalist Issac Bailey. Bailey will speak with Librarian Stephen Schmidt about his 2018 book, My Brother Moochie: Regaining Dignity in the Face of Crime, Poverty, and Racism in the American South, which was published by Other Press in 2018. My Brother Moochie is a rare first-person account that combines a journalist’s skilled reporting with the raw emotion of a younger brother’s heartfelt testimony of what his family endured after his eldest brother killed a man and was sentenced to life in prison.

The book is a powerful, personal exploration of race and racism and of the impact on a family when one of its own serves a life sentence for murder. In Moochie, Bailey addresses the issues of shame and isolation. In addition to having brothers who have spent significant time in prison, Bailey has a severe stutter, which he says has proved to have a greater impact on his life’s trajectory than his race.
