Companion Book Author Talk with Kwame Alexander, Author of “The Undefeated”

October 22, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Newbery-award winning children’s poet and educator Kwame Alexander will read from his bold and powerful poem, The Undefeated, chosen as the children’s GRT companion book. The reading will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Children’s Librarian Deirdre Sullivan.

The Undefeated, which Kirkus Reviews called a tribute to the ingenuity and resilience of Black people in the U.S., won the 2020 Caldecott Medal, was a 2020 Newbery Honor Book, and was also a winner of the 2020 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for Kadir Nelson’s impactful oil paintings. Originally performed for ESPN’s The Undefeated, it’s both a picture book and a poem that is a love letter to Black life in the United States. It highlights the unspeakable trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world’s greatest heroes.
