SUMMARY:Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum to Open “Bulls of Wall Street\,” a New Exhibition on 19th-century Finance
DESCRIPTION:The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will open a new exhibition titled\, “Bulls of Wall Street: High Finance\, Power\, and Social Change in Victorian America.” \nWith rare and never-before-seen period artifacts\, photos\, documents\, and costumes from public and private collections\, this exhibition curated by Museum Consultant Stacey Danielson will explore the financial world of LeGrand Lockwood\, one of America’s leading figures in 19th-century American finance\, and his peers—Vanderbilt and Gould. This program will also investigate the role of trailblazing women such as Victoria Woodhull and Hetty Green\, as well as individuals from marginalized communities such as the first black millionaire in America\, Jeremiah Hamilton\, who tried to break Wall Street’s “glass ceiling” and enter the world of finance and the market in 19th-century America. \nVisitors will also delve into the birth of Wall Street\, its financial instruments\, and scientific breakthroughs that modernized and accelerated the exchange of information\, making Wall Street the new economic engine\, and propelling “self-made men” to new heights of prosperity.\nMs. Danielson is a longtime independent museum professional who received her BS in business administration from Ohio University and holds a certificate in Historic Interiors and Decorative Arts from New York School of Interior Design. She has assisted many institutions with curatorial and exhibition work including the statewide Museum Makeover program conducted by Conservation ConneCTion and Connecticut League of Museums to enhance the visitor experience at cultural heritage organizations throughout the state. \nLMMM Chairman of the Board Douglas Hempstead and Executive Director Susan Gilgore said\, “The Museum is thrilled to open this exciting\, new exhibit on American finance\, which has been several years in the making. We are very grateful to CT Humanities and all our supporters and look forward to sharing rarely seen images and artifacts as well as a new perspective on early Wall Street with all our visitors.” \nAuthor and Independent Historian\, Sheri Caplan will join Ms. Danielson as an expert advisor on women’s history of finance. The exhibition was developed with the assistance of Independent Museum Curator/Consultant Kathleen Craughwell-Varda and several outstanding expert advisors including Challis Professor of History at The University of Sydney\, Australia\, Shane White\, award-winning author of\, “Prince of Darkness\, The Untold Story of Jeremiah G. Hamilton\, Wall Street’s First Black Millionaire” ; John E. Herzog\, who spearheaded the expansion of Herzog\, Heine\, Geduld\, Inc. into the third-largest NASDAQ market maker in the country\, founder of the Museum of American Finance in NYC\, and author of\, “A Billion to One”\, and Prof. Janice Traflet\, Ph.D. M.B.A. author of Traflet\, M. J.\, Wright\, E. R.\, (2022) “Fearless: Wilma Soss and America’s Forgotten Investor Movement\,” All Seasons Press. \nThe exhibition\, “Bulls of Wall Street” is generously sponsored by: CT Humanities\, for both the research and the implementation phases of the project\, and supporters Tim & Sheila Pettee\, Kathy Olsen\, and Dr. Michele & Attorney Miklos Koleszar. \nLMMM’s 2025 programs are made possible in part by LMMM’s Founding Patrons: The Estate of Mrs. Cynthia Clark Brown; LMMM’s Leadership Patrons: Dr. Michele & Attorney Miklos Koleszar\, and The Sealark Foundation; and LMMM’s 2025 Season Distinguished Benefactors: The City of Norwalk\, The Maurice Goodman Foundation\, Inc.\, and Lockwood-Mathews Foundation\, Inc. SUMMARY:PERFORMATIVE STORIES
DESCRIPTION:An immersive exhibition infused with theatrical flair and narrative depth. \n“Tell me a story” is a request as old as time and has formed the basis of human exploits since humans began to communicate. From the cave drawings at Altamira to the superheroes who zoom across our screens\, we are in the thrall of stories. \nJoin us for the opening reception\, Thursday\, January 15 from 6 – 8 pm. Exhibit runs through March 4\, 2026. \nThe four artists featured in Performative Stories have created works which provide visual expansion to the art of storytelling\, Dan Hurlin\, Janie Geiser\, Maiko Kikuchi and Jason Gardner employ colorful figures and motion to express varied narratives. As creators\, they ask that you as an audience member apply your imagination to complete their presentations. Curators Leslee Asch and Kate Sheridan Chung have expanded the conventional idea of storytelling to include tales that ask for viewer participation in constructing the plot. In an age of digital avatars\, AI-generated characters\, and cinematic universes\, our thirst for constructed realities remains unquenched. \nDan Hurlin\, an award-winning theater artist\, presents his figures in arrested time allowing the viewer to fill in the rest. The artwork presented in this show includes a large installation piece featuring 1⁄2 scale human figures in a setting that captures a moment in time. He invites viewers to interpret the implied story and emotion presented. He has taught at Sarah Lawrence\, Barnard\, Bowdoin\, Bennington and Princeton. In 2014 he won the Rome Prize in visual art\, and he has had three MacDowell Colony Fellowships. Dan currently divides his time between New York City and Spoleto\, Italy. \nJanie Geiser is a renowned experimental filmmaker and multimedia artist whose images demand viewers free their imaginations and allow themselves to be swept away by a flow of objects and ideas. Conventional rules of language and action step aside\, and the resulting images reach the unconscious\, associative realm of the mind\, both stimulating and startling her audience. Her films have been screened at major museums including National Gallery of Art\, MoMA\, the Whitney\, the Guggenheim\, LACMA\, Centre Pompidou\, and the British Film Institute. Her films have also screened at festivals including The New York Film Festival and London International Film Festival. She is based in Los Angeles and teaches at Cal Arts. \nMaiko Kikuchi\, a Tokyo-born artist and sculptor creates imaginary worlds as visual monologues. Still figures come to life and transform into moving characters and objects that delight viewers with their versatility. The transformation from a still life picture to a fanciful animation charms viewers with its imaginative and unexpected connections. She has presented her visual art works in several New York City galleries and has created work for numerous music videos and album covers. Maiko has an M.F.A. in sculpture from the Pratt Institute. \nJason Gardner\, a photographer\, approaches storytelling as a visual anthropologist. Gardner has documented rural Carnivale celebrations for fifteen years in fifteen countries. He explores aspects of this ancient tradition\, which stretches across continents\, involving ritual\, music\, and pageantry as expressions of the human spirit. Gardner’s artistic sensitivity for color\, form and composition is evident in every image. His photography has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times\, Sunday Times Magazine (UK)\, Rolling Stone\, and New York Magazine. His work has also been exhibited widely including Lincoln Center\, New Orleans Jazz Fest\, and several consulates. In 2024 GOST Books\, London published his book We the Spirits. All of the photos to be exhibited in this exhibition appear in We The Spirits. Jason currently divides his time between New York and Paris. \nEvents: \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, January 15\, 2026\, 6 – 8 pm \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, January 17\, 2026\, 2 pm\, featuring Jason Gardner and Dan Hurlin \nArtist Talk: Sunday\, March 1\, 2026\, featuring Janie Geiser and Maiko Kikuchi \nArt Lounge in conjunction with Friends Friday Films: Date and film TBD \nThe Flinn Gallery is a non-profit organization funded and sponsored by Friends of Greenwich Library. It is located on the second floor of the library at 101 West Putnam Avenue\, Greenwich\, CT.\nGallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm\, Thursday 10am-8pm\, and Sunday 1-5pm.

SUMMARY:Experiences at the Bruce: Documentary film\, Always Looking
DESCRIPTION:Always Looking explores the work of photographer Titus Brooks Heagins and the challenging questions his photos pose about the systemic neglect of society’s most vulnerable communities of color. Humanizing yet confrontational\, Titus’ photographs document the overlooked: people who\, through some intersection of poverty\, race or gender/sexual identity\, exist as outsiders. \nThis film dives into Titus’ world\, shedding light on the strength it takes to be a marginalized Black photographer capturing the lives of other marginalized folks. \nJoin us for an in-depth conversation with film maker Olympia Stone and artist Titus Brooks Heagins following the film. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided.\nFee: $10 for Members/Non-Members. SUMMARY:Bird Feeder-Watch Fridays at Greenwich Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Spend a leisurely afternoon watching and counting birds from Greenwich Audubon’s bird feeder window!\nThe winter months are the perfect time to become acquainted with our resident songbirds. Come join us for this recurring program on Friday afternoons where Audubon Naturalist Ryan MacLean will point out the species of birds coming to our Learning Center’s bird feeder station and provide tips on both identifying and feeding them. \nWe’ll also share how to participate in Project FeederWatch—a winter-long community science survey of the birds that visit feeders in your backyards\, parks\, offices\, and other areas. You and your family can participate by counting the birds you see in your backyard and submitting them to the Project FeederWatch website. We will provide identification guides to backyard birds and information on how you can take part in Project FeederWatch and even submit a checklist of our own at the end of the program! \nAll ages are welcome including children after school and senior citizens. Our building is ADA accessible so wheelchairs and mobility devices can be used. \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity and will be held indoors. \nRegistration is FREE but tickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. The rate for children and adults is the same. \nUpon arrival please check in at the front desk and proceed to our Learning Center bird feeder window. \nFor questions\, please contact Ryan MacLean at Ryan.MacLean@audubon.org or 203-930-1353 \nPhoto: Carolina Wren + Downy Woodpecker.
