The Best Part of My Job

The best part of my job is connecting with students and working with great educators across the Greenwich Public Schools. Because of my work, I met Gardy, Domna, Noemy, Bleona, Grace, Alison, Armin and more and have been able to assist them with AVID SUCCESS Mentors, Scholarships and Jobs and Professional Skills and Tuning In To Music lessons. I have learned a lot from them and they have enriched my experience as the Executive Director of the Greenwich Alliance for Education.

Greenwich Alliance the Passing of the Year

The passing of one year of shutting down for the pandemic. Suddenly we needed to reimagine many ways of doing just about everything. Our Trivia Challenge became a virtual event and so did our Tuning In To Music Program and the Financial Reality Fair sponsored by Members Credit Union, yet we have made progress and students and teachers in the Greenwich Public Schools and the AVID Alumni are benefiting from the Greenwich Alliance and the generous community who supports us.

UNBOUND INNOVATIONS – VIRTUAL REALITY Happened this Summer

The Greenwich Alliance for Education hired AVID students and alumni and funded Unbound Summer VR, a project designed to be a testing platform for Unbound Innovations – a VR Makery at Western Middle School and Alliance Reaching out Grant recipient for 2019-2021 (Alliance investment $74,000). Unbound Summer VR started in mid-July and each day, the six students met virtually with Mr. Lipari and Mrs. Giorlando DeRosa wearing Oculus headsets. They experimented with VR software and collaborated using AltspaceVR a virtual meeting place. One student commented that VR could be the “future of technology in education."

Greenwich Alliance for Education Pivots to Meet Needs

With the transformation from school-based education to distance learning, the Greenwich Alliance for Education is pivoting to meet the short and long-term needs of the Greenwich Public Schools, both for teachers and students. They continue to focus, in particular, on the educational needs of the AVID community – teachers, students, and alums - as many of the AVID students are those being provided food and other human service needs through other agencies. The Alliance is funding requests for school supplies and books, teaching Tuning In To Music lessons via Skype, and working with their grantees to provide virtual content. The Alliance can handle more of these educational requests right away and is in contact with school administrators and other non-profit organizations to determine needs as they arise. .
