Marking National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Each October, there is an explosion of pink as retailers, airlines, restaurants and others all around the country prepare to bring awareness to breast cancer. At Breast Cancer Alliance, our pursuit of better treatments and, ultimately cures, is steadfast all year long, but October affords us a window of added attention to bring awareness, quality education and certainly funding to the forefront.

The Blood in Your Veins Can Ease the Suffering of Others

The need for blood is constant, but we are in particularly tough times right now as the Red Cross recently announced a national blood shortage. September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and I think many people would be surprised to learn that a sickle cell patient can need up to 100 units of blood each year to treat each flare-up of the chronic condition.

Providing people a Path to life with meaning and happiness

Pathways offers several levels of housing programs to support clients needing varying degrees of support. Our services extend to clients living independently in our community with support services. Attaining this level of independence is a measure of success for our clients and the result of the compassionate work Pathways staff provides.

RMA Presents: “Raising Monarchs”

Jo Ubogy shared beautiful photos of her gardens and Monarch butterflies in all their stages of metamorphosis. She also warned of the dangers to the existence of the Monarchs---logging and land development, as well as climate change and pesticides. Private citizens, municipalities and businesses could all be part of the solution by planting native species of shrubbery and avoiding the use of pesticides.

RMA Presents: “What Is Next for Connecticut’s Fastest Growing City?”

With the recent increase of 10,000 new residents, Stamford is now the second largest city in Connecticut, and is in sound financial condition, having received a triple-A bond rating. Mayor Simmons has instituted a number of new programs to improve quality of life, including safer streets, a thriving job market, beautification of parks, renovation of schools, marinas, roads, and sidewalks, and reduced environmental impact. She seeks to restore faith in local government, and is proving to be a dynamic, well spoken, intelligent, exciting young politician.
