Meals-on-Wheels Is Accepting New Clients as Local Need Persists

By Debra McLaughlin

Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Greenwich is accepting new clients, offering affordable meal delivery to residents who cannot shop for or prepare meals for themselves.

The need for food support in Greenwich is real, local and often unseen. According to the Greenwich United Way’s 2025 Needs Assessment, about 4.4% of Greenwich residents receive some form of public assistance, including SNAP, while about 10% have incomes below 185% of the federal poverty level and may be eligible for food assistance. The report also found that need is concentrated in neighborhoods including Byram, Chickahominy and South Center.

For many residents, food insecurity does not look like a public crisis. It may be an older adult living alone, a person recovering from surgery, someone managing illness or disability, or a family member trying to help a loved one remain safely at home. Housing costs, health challenges, transportation limitations and fixed incomes can all make regular meals difficult to manage.

Meals-on-Wheels has served Greenwich residents for more than six decades. The organization provides reliable, nutritious meals directly to clients’ doors, helping residents maintain independence while giving families a practical support system.

The sign-up process is designed to be simple. There are no age or income restrictions, no medical referral requirement and no complicated paperwork. Greenwich residents who cannot shop or cook for themselves may receive meals on a short-term or long-term basis. Clients may sign up for as many or as few days as they need, with no long-term contract or commitment.

The service costs $10 per day for two meals, lunch and dinner. A one-meal option, either lunch or dinner, is available for $7. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday by volunteers. Weekend meals are also available and are delivered with Friday service.

Meals are prepared with nutrition and safety in mind. The regular weekday service includes one lunch meal and one dinner meal, and menus are reviewed by a registered dietitian. Therapeutic dietary options include diabetic-friendly, low-lactose, bland, chopped, pureed and lacto-ovo-vegetarian meals. All meals are nut free and shellfish free.

Donor support helps keep the service affordable and dependable. Contributions help cover meal costs, sustain daily delivery and strengthen a local safety net for Greenwich residents who need consistent food support.

Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Greenwich is encouraging residents, caregivers, neighbors, clergy, physicians and community organizations to help identify people who may benefit. A person does not have to be in crisis to qualify. The service is available to residents who need help getting reliable meals, whether for a few weeks or for a longer period.
