Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones announced the appointment of Mr. Matthew Laskowski as principal of Western Middle School, effective July 1. Mr. Laskowski replaces Ms. Suzanne Coyne, who departed GPS for a different home-work balance that she and her family needed.

“Mr. Matthew Laskowski has a history of impressive leadership, specifically at the middle school level, and has a strong reputation for being a collaborative and supportive leader who wants every student to be successful, and every staff member to be supported,” Dr. Jones said. “He is a leader who is in the trenches with his staff, visiting classrooms on a daily basis, problem-solving directly with his staff, and communicating directly with families and students to make the school environment top notch. During the hiring process, all of his references talked about a work ethic which is off-the-charts and his ability to create a positive environment that brings the entire school community together as one cohesive team moving in the same direction.”

Since 2015, Mr. Laskowski has served in Stamford Public Schools, most recently as associate superintendent overseeing the district’s middle schools since 2024. In this position, he supervised and coached principals across five middle schools and two K-8 schools and led strategic alignment of school improvement plans with district priorities. From 2022 through 2024, Mr. Laskowski was the executive director of access and opportunity. Previously, he was the principal of Rippowam Middle School from 2017 through 2022 and assistant principal at Stamford High School from 2015 through 2017. Mr. Laskowski began his career in education as a physical education/health teacher at Rogers Park Middle School, followed by the dean of student support and lead developer, Danbury early college opportunity at Danbury High School  in the Danbury School District.

“I believe leadership begins with being present, listening, and building meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families,” Mr. Laskowski said. ”Western Middle School’s commitment to collaboration, student growth, and continuous improvement made it the kind of school community I wanted to be part of. My goal is to build on Western’s many strengths while ensuring every child is known, challenged, supported, and empowered to succeed.”

Mr. Laskowski earned a bachelor’s degree in Movement and Sports Studies/Physical Education from Springfield College and a master’s in Special Education from Western Connecticut State University. He also holds a degree in Advanced Educational Leadership from the University of New England and a certificate in Leading Change from Harvard University.
