Chamber Players of the Greenwich Symphony to Open 53rd Season

The Chambers Players of the Greenwich Symphony open their 53rd season with a pair of concerts: Sunday, October 6, 3pm at First Congregational Church of Old Greenwich, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, and Monday, October 7, 7:30pm at Greenwich Historical Society, Vanderbilt Education Center, 47 Strickland Road, Cos Cob.

The Chamber Players will perform Elizabeth Brown’s Pentalogue for Woodwind Quintet, Beethoven’s Sextet in E flat major, Op. 71, and Carl Nielsen’s Quintet for Winds, Op. 43.

Composer Elizabeth Brown’s (b. 1953) wind quintet Pentalogue is her response to events during the COVID epidemic. In five movements, it was composed “during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time also full of political turmoil, including Black Lives Matter’s heartbreaking ‘I can’t breathe’ protests. I was trying to write something with beauty and hope, but the five movements contain all my anxiety about breath. Maybe that’s why three dark musical quotes insinuated themselves into my subconscious so many times that I gave up trying to get rid of them.”

Musicians for this performance are Susan Rotholz, flute; Diane Lesser, oboe; KeriAnn DiBari, Clarinet; Megan Shumate Beaumont, clarinet; Mark Davies, bassoon; Gili Sharett, bassoon; and Peter Reit, horn.

Complimentary “Wine and Cheese” receptions are after the Sunday concert, and during intermission of the Monday performance, offering an opportunity to chat with the chamber musicians and friends.

Subscriptions for the 4-concert 53rd Season are $100 for adults, $15 for students. Single concert tickets are $35 for adults, $5 for students. Subscriptions and single tickets can be purchased via the Chamber Players website, www.chamberplayersofthegso.com, by phone 203-637-4725, or at the door.
