The 35th Annual Greenwich Point One Mile Swim was held on Saturday, July 13, at Tod’s Point. Despite the rain, nearly 100 swimmers participated, prompting organizers to shorten the course to a half-mile.
Sponsored by The Greenwich Swim Committee and the YMCA of Greenwich, proceeds from the One Mile Swim event help to provide swim school instruction and critical water safety skills to local children.
These funds support the YMCA of Greenwich’s swim school and new Safety Around Water program, launched in partnership with Greenwich Public Schools for the 2023-2024 school year. This program evaluated the water safety skills of over 600 fourth graders and provided free lessons to those identified as lacking water safety skills. It aims to help children in our coastal community learn essential water safety skills, opening up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.
“The YMCA of Greenwich is proud to partner with the Greenwich Swim Committee to host the One Mile Swim event, which honors swimming as a competitive, fun, and community-centered sport. We are grateful for the proceeds that support our water safety programs, helping to make this sport more accessible and safe for everyone in our community,” said Matthew Skaarup, CEO of the YMCA of Greenwich.
Callum Hall, 15, placed first with an impressive time of 8:59. Olivia DeVries, 13, a player on the YMCA’s Greenwich Aquatics Water Polo team, placed first for women with a time of 9:17. This year’s race marked a milestone with an unprecedented level of participation from both middle school and high school swimmers.
According to Jon Harnett, Chairman of the Greenwich Swim Committee, “It was great to see so many people come out to support the event despite the weather. Congratulations to the two youth that placed first and second for their outstanding performances.”
