The Flinn Gallery, in collaboration with browngrotta arts of Wilton, CT, proudly presents WordPlay: Messages in Branches & Bark, an exhibition featuring the work of internationally renowned artists Gyöngy Laky and John McQueen. The exhibition, which runs from March 30 to May 10, 2023, showcases the artists’ unique sculptures that combine natural materials and unexpected man-made elements, forming baskets, words, symbols, books, and animal and human figures. Coinciding with Earth Day, the event highlights Laky and McQueen’s deep concern for environmental, political, and social issues.

The exhibition is designed to be accessible for all ages, including hands-on activities for children, such as a materials’ touch box, “I Spy,” and word search puzzles catering to various skill levels.

Gyöngy Laky, a textile artist and sculptor born in 1944, is often referred to as a “wood whisperer.” Her intricate assemblages of wood and found objects have significantly contributed to the modern fiber-arts movement. Laky’s work incorporates organic materials like apple branches and orchard trimmings, combined with manufactured materials, such as screws, wire, zip-ties, golf tees, toothpicks, and coffee stirrers. As an “artist participant,” Laky’s art often comments on environmental and political issues that concern her.

John McQueen, a sculptor born in 1943, utilizes willow, bamboo, birch bark, and waxed string to create lifelike animal and human images, as well as objects like baskets and books that feature woven text. McQueen’s work employs traditional basketmaking techniques that he learned at Pueblo reservations in New Mexico in the 1970s. Incorporating flattened and cut pieces of plastic bottles, his art explores the relationship between the natural and man-made world.

WordPlay: Messages in Branches & Bark displays over 50 sculptures by these innovative artists, inviting viewers to decipher words, meanings, and examine the pieces’ construction. The exhibition exudes wit, whimsy, and fantasy, leaving visitors both amazed and amused. All displayed works are available for sale, with proceeds supporting public programming for patrons of all ages through the Friends of the Greenwich Library.

The Opening Reception is scheduled for Thursday, March 30, from 6 – 8 pm. Additional events include a curator-led exhibition tour with Tom Grotta, an online artist talk with Gyöngy Laky, and an artist talk with John McQueen. Children’s programs will also be offered through the Greenwich Library.
