March is Red Cross Month

Greenwich residents are preparing for Red Cross Month in March by honoring their local heroes who make the American Red Cross mission possible. From hurricanes to home fires and blood donation needs, community heroes are rallying together to care for their neighbors in need.

The American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter, which includes Greenwich, is celebrating the 80th annual Red Cross Month by recognizing those who have made the organization’s humanitarian work possible. Stephanie Dunn Ashley, CEO of the American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter, noted that the spirit of compassion and generosity is at the heart of their community.

In Greenwich, the community is continuing the legacy of Clara Barton, who founded the American Red Cross more than 140 years ago. Barton’s vision to prevent and alleviate human suffering continues to inspire the work of today’s volunteers and supporters.

The Red Cross’s lifesaving work includes providing comfort and care following local disasters such as home fires, deploying and supporting responses to disasters outside of the greater New York area, teaching lifesaving skills like CPR, and supporting military communities at every stage of service. In addition, the organization collects lifesaving blood from selfless donors.

Greenwich residents can participate in Red Cross Month by visiting the organization’s website to make a financial donation, give blood, become a volunteer, or take a class in lifesaving skills. Additionally, on March 22, the annual Red Cross Giving Day campaign will take place, allowing people to donate to help provide shelter, food, relief items, emotional support, and other assistance for people affected by disasters big and small.

Those interested in volunteering with the American Red Cross can attend a virtual information session on March 16, 2023, to learn more about the organization’s different volunteer opportunities.

Finally, for those looking to prevent a blood shortage, volunteering to donate blood during the month of March can earn you a $10 Visa® Prepaid Card and a chance to win a $3,000 Visa Prepaid Card to help with expenses like gas or groceries. With blood donation opportunities throughout Connecticut, there’s no better time to lend an arm and help keep the blood supply from dropping this spring.

The American Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission. For more information on how to get involved, visit redcross.org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or follow them on Twitter at @RedCross.
