Greenwich Country Day School’s girls basketball team has had a successful end to their regular season, winning their final four league matches and securing the No. 5 seed in the upcoming FAA Tournament. The Tigers ended the season with a record of 5-4 in the FAA, and their final regular-season victory was a key matchup against School of the Holy Child, the team they fought against for the same No. 5 seed last season.

Led by junior point guard Brianna McDermott, who scored a team-best 20 points, and freshman forward Mia Grant, who added 14 points, Greenwich Country Day beat Holy Child 52-48 in a tight game. The Tigers were tied at halftime, 28-28, before pulling ahead to hold a 40-38 lead after three quarters.

The Tigers’ victory over Holy Child came in impressive fashion, as the visiting Gryphons tried to pressure McDermott, who was able to navigate the squad’s offense with her slick dribbling skills. “The 2-3 hurts us when we’re not shooting the ball well, but once we started moving the ball, it all started clicking,” McDermott said.

Grant powered the Tigers’ offense in the third quarter, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the quarter, which helped put the Tigers on top. “The second half, she came out on fire. I’m so proud of her,” said coach Elisa Brown of Grant’s performance.

With the victory over Holy Child, the Tigers secured their place in the FAA Tournament, where they will face off against the fourth-seeded Sacred Heart Greenwich. The team is excited for the upcoming game and hopes to turn the tables after losing to Sacred Heart in the tournament last year.

“Our chemistry has improved and we’ve come together nicely as a team,” said sophomore guard/forward Nina Ferry. “We’re making less mistakes and we’re playing well together as a team.” Brown was also impressed with the team’s progress and is proud of their defensive play in the Holy Child game. “They really stepped up and played the game we needed to play,” she said.

As the Tigers head into the FAA Tournament, they hope to continue their impressive form and build on their end-of-season momentum. With a strong performance from their key players and solid team play, they have the potential to make a deep run in the tournament and come out on top.
