Ignited by strong performances in the relays, the Greenwich High School boys indoor track and field team proved it’s one of the premier squads in the state, finishing an impressive second in the team standings at the ultra-competitive CIAC Class LL Championships this past weekend at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

At the same site where they captured the team title at the FCIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago, the Cardinals continued to excel on a challenging stage, racing to fast times throughout the 22-team Class LL championship meet.

Hall finished first in the team standings, earning 96 points, while Greenwich placed second with 38 points. Staples was third (36), followed by Danbury and Fairfield Ludlowe, which had 29 points apiece, to round out the top-five Class LL teams.

“It’s been rewarding seeing the hard work from the regular season pay off in this successful championship season,” Greenwich junior Harrison Goldenberg said. “The team really rose to the occasion with the increased competition the LL meet brought, especially because we were able to score in all four relays.”

Greenwich’s victory at the Class LL Championships came in the 4 x 200-meter relay race. Sophomore Caleb You, senior Gianluca Bianchi, sophomore Cameron Williams and Goldenberg combined for a gold medal winning time of 1:32.39. Hamden was the runner-up in the event (1:33.79).

“We ran a great time to win the 4 x 200,” Bianchi said.

In the 4 x 400-meter relay, Williams, Bianchi, Antonio Ciccarelli and Goldenberg were second in Class LL, registering a highly impressive time of 3:29.13. Hall had a first-place finish in 3:26.66. Bianchi recorded the Cardinals’ top individual finish at the Class LL Championships, placing second in the 300-meter run (34.72 seconds). Goldenberg was fourth in the race, clocking in at 36.63 seconds. The race was won by Hall’s Samuel Sandler (34.71).

You finished sixth for GHS in the 55-meter dash (6.71 seconds), which saw Mason Pilkington of Endfield win it with a time of 6.42 seconds. Sophomore Thomas Donovan gave Greenwich a seventh-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, recording a time of 16.27 seconds.

“Giving the underclassmen the chance to perform at such a high level meet certainly increased team morale and we are ready to move forward into the State Open meet.”

In the 1600-meter event, freshman Mateo Chiesara took ninth for the Cardinals in 4:38.83, while junior teammate Christian Zawislack was sixth in the 3200-meter competition (9:45.85).

Greenwich’s 1600 sprint medley squad placed fourth in 3:44.20, while its 4 x 800 competitors (junior Aidan Fay, Ciccarelli, senior Wyatt Abernethy and Chiesara were fifth in the 4 x 800.

“We ended the meet with a second-place finish in the 4 x 400 to get the points needed to secure second place,” Bianchi said.

The Cardinals are set to soar again at the Floyd Little Athletic Center, as they will compete in Saturday’s CIAC State Open Championships, which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
