Nat King Cole was a child prodigy pianist, growing up in Chicago in the 1930s, and sneaking into clubs to hear jazz by the big names of the time, like Louis Armstrong. From playing in night clubs in his teens to forming a band and then a highly regarded trio, Cole developed into a singer, entertainer, and recording artist, helping Capitol Records become a major label. Throughout the 1950s, Cole sold millions of records around the world, making him one of the most successful African-American solo stars in history.
