ABIGAIL ANDERS APPOINTED ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT NORTH MIANUS SCHOOL
This past Wednesday, June 20th, Dr. Toni Jones appointed Abigail Anders as assistant principal of North Mianus School. Anders will be replacing Kathleen Ramirez, who is becoming principal as of July 1st.

GPS Rep. for 2023 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Selected
Tyler Mecozzi of Western Middle School has been selected for Greenwich Public Schools’ Connecticut State Dept of Education’s 2023 Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program. Mecozzi was recognized for this honor during the most recent Board of Education virtual meeting.

Greenwich United Way Welcomes New Board of Directors Members
Last Wednesday, June 15th, the Greenwich United Way welcomed four new members at their annual meeting; Pamela Fornero, Sabrina Forsythe, Clarena McBeth and Antonio Miranda.

Boot Drive Fundraiser
Rather than hosting the Cos Cob Fire Police benefit this year, the CCFPP will be collecting donations for its second annual Boot Drive. These donations will help offset funds which would have been raised at the benefit. The Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol, Inc. is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting the residents of the Town of Greenwich since 1927. Greenwich Celebrates First Juneteenth
Last Friday’s Was Greenwich’s first ever Juneteenth event. Juneteenth became a state holiday only recently, when Gov. Ned Lamont signed it into law this past May.

New Officers Elected by the Greenwich Library’s Board of Trustees
The Greenwich Library Board of Trustees elected new officers at their meeting this past May; Peggy Edersheim Kalb, President; Hank Ashforth, First Vice President; Diana Seaton, Second Vice President; Philip Lochner, Secretary; Ian Murray, Treasurer; and John Blankley, Member-at-Large.

North Street School Girl Scouts Earn Their Democracy badges
On Monday, June 13th, the Girlscout Troop number 50303, including girls from Kindergarten through Fifth-Grade from North Street Elementary School, met with various female town leaders to ask them questions about what it is like to be a leader. This meeting was in preparation to earn their democracy and government badges.

La Fe fires out win in second round of East Coast Bronze Cup
Last Sunday, La Fe, the Wellington, Florida-based 16-goal team, powered its way to an 11-8 victory over IGEA Dazos, a 16-goal Wellington, Florida contingent, in the second round of the 2022 East Coast Bronze Cup. Playing in front of a crowd of nearly three thousand-plus spectators, the players and ponies of both teams lit up Conyers Farm, the famed site of the Greenwich Polo Club on Hurlingham Drive, with their potent strength, skills and presence.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Shakespeare celebrated by the ESU Greenwich Branch
Natalie Pray was welcomed guests at the Belle Haven entrance on Sunday afternoon in her seventh year as president of the Greenwich Branch of the English-Speaking Union (ESU). The ladies came in their colorful swirl of hats, the gentlemen in their summer suits. This year they celebrated Her Majesty, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and 96th birthday with champagne, tea, finger sandwiches and chocolate desserts.

Urgent Need for Kidney Donor to Help Greenwich Single Mom
A single mom of 10-year-old Melanie, Greenwich resident Meire Santos is in desperate need of a kidney. And is now working with the Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation and three devoted families to find a match. Last June, Santos began having severe headaches and high blood pressure, two common symptoms of chronic kidney disease. A month later, thinking she was having a heart attack, she went to the hospital, only to learn that both her kidneys were not working, and that she had 14% kidney function. Greenwich High School Waterfall Gets a Facelift
The waterfall, holding pond, and other natural areas at Putnam and Hillside roads next to Greenwich High School will be redesigned to conserve Greenwich High School’s natural beauty. The Waterfall Project aims “to preserve and protect the last natural and environmentally sensitive site on the GHS [Greenwich High School] campus”. The project is taking into account the needs of the dilapidated environment from where to plant the trees to what flowers to line the charming area with.

United Way launches Math Champions Pilot Program in Cos Cob School
This spring Greenwich United Way launched a pilot of Math Champions in Cos Cob School, a program to help elementary students achieve their academic benchmarks and goals. The Math Champions pilot delivers volunteer-led math support with engaging, educational games for Kindergarten through fifth grade. The Greenwich United Way plans to scale Math Champions to support math literacy progress with the same level of focused attention and individualized student support. The aim is to motivate progress and inspire greater student confidence. Thieves Stole 5 new Jeeps from Greenwich lot
Earlier this month, thieves stole keys from a locked box at a small lot on the automotive stretch of Greenwich’s west end used as a transportation drop-off by Greenwich Chrysler Jeep. Thieves used these keys to take the vehicles.

Greenwich Resident Promoted to colonel in NY Army National Guard
Greenwich resident Jeff Csoka was promoted to colonel in the New York Army National Guard during a ceremony at Camp Smith Training site near Peekskill, NY on May 15th. Csoka is a graduate of West Point, has served in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, and is the commander of the 106th Regional Training Institute. The 106th coordinates and conducts training for National Guard Soldiers.

Greenwich’s sprint medley relay team of Cameron Williams, Harrison Goldenberg, Gianluca Bianchi, Zachary Jelinek earn All-America honors at New Balance Nationals
Greenwich High School’s 1600-meter sprint medley relay team came home from the New Balance Nationals Outdoor with All-American honors. With the fifth-place showing, the Cardinals quartet earned All-America medals at the prestigious national meet.

Greenwich’s Zack Carifa places second in the country in the pentathlon at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Philadelphia
An athlete competing in the pentathlon at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor, Zack Carifa had a busier day than most competitors at the prestigious meet. And when his non-stop day was finished, Carifa’s overall performances gave him a spectacular second-place finish in the country and All-American honors.

Greenwich High’s sprint medley relay team of Kaitlyn Fay, Olivia Eslava, Haley Townsend, Esme Daplyn earned All-America honors with second-place finish at New Balance Nationals
Greenwich High School’s 1600-meter sprint medley relay team will never forget Friday, June 17, 2022. That’s the day the foursome of Kaitlyn Fay, Olivia Eslava, Haley Townsend and Esme Daplyn teamed up to produce an All-America performance at one of track and field’s biggest stages – the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. The Cardinals’ speedy quartet posted an outstanding second-place finish in the Championship division of the 1600-meter sprint medley at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor in Philadelphia, Pa., registering a time of 4:07.64. Their impressive time earned them a first-place finish in their heat, an overall second-place finish in the nation in their race, a silver medal and All-America accolades.

Zachary Jelinek chosen as Greenwich High’s Male Athlete of the Year
Zachary Jelinek knew he was receiving an award when he was invited to attend Greenwich High School’s Senior Awards night recently, but he wasn’t sure what it would be. A senior, Jelinek received the Athlete of the Year Award for excelling on the Cardinals’ outdoor and indoor track and field team. He was also a key contributor on Greenwich’s cross country team.
