League of Women Voters Greenwich Award 2022 Recipients
The League of Women Voters (LWV) Greenwich Board has announced its volunteer Award winners: Nancy Aborn Duffy, Mary Award Recipient; and Helaine Aronson Winer, Burnett Award Recipient. To read about their backgrounds and awards visit the LWV website. Nancy and Helaine will both be recognized at the Annual LWV Dinner on June 1st at 6:30pm at the Riverside Yacht Club.

Help Maritime Aquarium Tag Horseshoe Crabs
During the new and full moons in the spring, horseshoe crabs come out of Long Island Sound. This means it is the perfect time to tag the animals for the ongoing horseshoe crab census. Volunteers must attend an in-person training session at The Maritime Aquarium: at 7pm on either Wednesday, May 18th. Volunteers will learn about the history of horseshoe crabs, the census, and how to harmlessly tag the crabs. Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Younger children can assist if working with a parent, teacher or guardian. If you’ve helped tag crabs before, you do not need to attend the training. GHS 2022 Commencement Speaker Announced
“60 Minutes” Executive Producer and Greenwich resident Bill Owens will be the Greenwich High School 2022 Commencement Speaker. GHS Commencement will be Thursday, June 23 at Cardinal Stadium.

Local Author Wins National Book Award
After the Fact by local Greenwich author Jeff Cooper won the 2022 Independent Press Award (IPA) for best legal thriller. The IPA competition is judged by experts from different aspects of the book industry. Selected IPA Award Winners and Distinguished Favorites are based on overall excellence. Michael T. Goldstein to Seek Signatures
Former New York County Medical Society President and longtime Fairfield County Resident Michael T. Goldstein, M.D., J.D. is seeking signatures in order to get onto the ballot for the Republican nomination for Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District.

Bruce Museum’s 37th Annual Craft Fair
The Bruce Museum is holding their 37th Annual Crafts Festival next Saturday and Sunday, May 21st and 22nd, from 10am – 5pm both days. Along with the craft fair, the new addition to the Bruce Museum will be visible from the Festival grounds, and the newly renovated permanent science galleries, Natural Cycles Shape Our Land, will be open to the public.

The Greenwich Department of Human Services Funding Request for Proposal (RFP)
The Greenwich Department of Human Services (GDHS) is requesting proposals for disbursement of funds to social service and behavioral health agencies through the Town’s Community Partnerships Program. Eligibility to apply for this funding is limited to 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organizations that provide services in the following areas:
Basic Human Needs – housing, nutrition, healthcare, mental health services/counseling and financial services
Community Resources – vocational and job development, employment, transportation, technology, service coordination and immigration support
Needs of families, children and seniors – childcare, education, or recreation Personal Safety – protection against abuse, neglect, and domestic abuse.
Interested non-profits may obtain a copy of the Request for Proposal (Community Partnerships) via the Town of Greenwich web-site or https://www.greenwichct.gov/538/Human-Services. The deadline for submitting an application is June 20, 2022.

Greenwich High School Presents Into the Woods
The GHS Theater Arts Department presents Into the Woods at the GHS Performing Arts Center, May 19 through May 21 at 7:00 pm each night. Tickets are $20.00 and can purchased online at https://tinyurl.com/GHSIntoTheWoods

Greenwich Department of Human Services Logo Contest
Students ages 5-19 in the Town of Greenwich have been invited to submit an original logo design for the Greenwich Department of Human Services. The logo may be used in all media – including online, print, on merchandise and other visual collateral. Greenwich Hospital Physician Honored with United Hospital Fund’s Excellence in Healthcare Award
This past Monday, the United Hospital Fund (UHF) announced the winners of its 2022 Excellence in Health Care Award for Quality Improvement Champions, including Christopher Davison, MD, FACEP, medical director of Greenwich Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Department. A total of 73 honorees were recognized at an in-person event in New York City after two years of virtual ceremonies.

YMCA of Greenwich Hosts A Starry Night
Last Friday, the YMCA of Greenwich hosted its 2022 annual gala, A Starry Night honoring long-time board member and Chair, Shahryar Oveissi and Lynn Hagerbrant, co-founder of Shaker’s Anonymous and Parkinson’s Body and Mind Program. The gala was held at Burning Tree Country Club and raised over $275,000.

Art to the Avenue Returns
Art to the Avenue returns for 2022 which began with a kick off on Thursday, May 5th. Art to the Avenue is a popular collaboration between local commerce and artists that will be taking place from May 5-31.

Greenwich Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) in Search of Mallard Nests
The DEEP Wildlife Division is searching for Mallard Duck nests as part of a large-scale project assessing nesting success, nest habitat selection, brood movement, and habitat use of mallard ducks. Please email min.huang@ct.gov if you find a nest.

Suicide postvention is an organized way of responding after a death by suicide, and the Greenwich Suicide Postvention Response Team has been formed in order to assist residents in receiving needed support after a death by suicide. The Suicide Postvention Response Team can help by connecting you to emotional or spiritual support, linking you with needed medical care.

2023 CT Budget has Largest Tax Cut in State History
This past Monday, Governor Ned Lamont announced that he signed into law the fiscal year 2023 budget adjustment bill. This legislation, House Bill 5506, includes just over $600 million in tax cuts. House Bill 5506 was approved with bipartisan support.

New US Attorney for District of CT Sworn In
This past Monday in New Haven, Vanessa Roberts Avery was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut by Chief US District Judge Stefan Underhill. President Joe Biden nominated Avery to serve as US Attorney on January 26, 2022. The US Senate then confirmed her nomination on April 27, 2022.

Juneteenth Holiday Passes in CT’s House of Representatives
Last Wednesday, the Connecticut General Assembly finished their legislative session. The General Assembly voted 148-1 in favor of making Juneteenth a state holiday, with the legislation SB 350. The bill passed in the state Senate this past Tuesday 35-1. Now to become law, Gov. Lamont will need to sign off on SB 350.

GHS Innovation Lab Students Win Top Prizes
Four ninth graders from GHS’s Innovation Lab program won at the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center’s national Genocide Awareness Contest. Students were invited to submit an original project in any sort of artistic media to commemorate some aspect of a genocide occurring in the 20th or 21st centuries.
First Place: Maya Antipov with her original art, “Left Behind” honoring the victims of the war in Syria
Second Place: Benjamin Adovasio with his original art, “The Ukrainian Conflict Memorial”, a 3D model honoring the atrocities currently taking place in Ukraine
Third Place: Sasha Peterson with her original art, “The Hidden Genocide” showcasing the Rohingya minority being targeted by the government of Myanmar
Honorable Mention: Lorenzo Pugliese with his video “The Uyghurs” – showcasing genocidal actions taken by the Chinese government against this ethnic and religious minority.
The Human Rights Education Center Human Rights Education Center is making a donation on the winners’ behalf to the Afya Foundation.

Trevor Crow Endorsed by 36th Senate District Democrats
This past Tuesday, Trevor Crow was endorsed, unanimously, by Democratic delegates to be the democratic nominee in the 36th State Senate District race.

Greenwich Farmers Market Returns
The Greenwich Farmers Market will open for the 2022 season on Saturday, May 14. The Farmer’s Market runs weekly on Saturday from 9:30am t0 1pm in the Horseneck Lane commuter parking lot just off of I-95’s Exit 3. Parking is free during market hours. No pets allowed.

RTM Approves Municipal Budget For Fiscal Year 2022/2023
In the early hours of this past Tuesday morning, the Representative Town Meeting approved Greenwich’s $465 million budget for fiscal year 2022/2023 after a near six-hour meeting that had begun at 7 pm Monday night. The budget was approved with 165 in favor, 3 opposed and 4 abstaining.

Greenwich Historical Society Celebrates 90th Anniversary
Greenwich Historical Society celebrated its 90th anniversary yesterday. The Historical Society hosted an anniversary party at its Cos Cob campus to celebrate.

Stamp Out Hunger
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is happening tomorrow, May 14. Greenwich residents are encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable foods by their mailbox tomorrow morning so letter carriers can pick up the bags during their route and deliver them to Neighbor to Neighbor’s food pantry that same day. For residents who cannot participate in the food drive, Givehealthy allows people to donate fresh produce, milk, and eggs to Neighbor to Neighbor.
