Greenlight/Youth Climate Action – Special Earth Day Program – Presented in Partnership with Bedford 2030
Wednesday, April 21, 7:00pm

Presented by Sarah Douglis, Bedford 2030

This special Earth Day event will uplift and highlight the youth of our community who are taking action on climate change. The format for the event will be a short video introducing the Greenlight students and their projects followed by a student panel discussion with audience Q&A.

Bedford 2030’s Greenlight Award challenges students to brainstorm, plan, and execute advocacy or innovation ideas to catalyze behavior change and promote sustainability in their community.

Earth’s Development and the Need for Decarbonization
Thursday, April 22, 7:00pm

Q&A With Dr. Alex Halliday

Alex Halliday of the Earth Institute will discuss the development of the Earth and the critical need to decarbonize in order to address the climate challenge. Earth’s surface environment has changed dramatically over billions of years of development.  Scientists have been modeling the climate for decades and sounding the alarm about global warming. The evidence now suggests that climate change is going to be worse than most scientists, let alone the wider public, had realized. Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for decades.  Therefore, much of this is effectively irreversible and will worsen without new technologies to remove carbon from the atmosphere. This talk will finish with the challenges for the future of decarbonization, including the technologies and actions that are needed, and some of the reasons to be optimistic.

Alex Halliday is the Director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute.  He joined the Earth Institute in April 2018, after spending more than a decade at the University of Oxford, during which time he was dean of science and engineering.
