March Happenings at Bedford Playhouse

screen-shot-2021-03-05-at-4-53-57-pm

We are very excited by the news that Governor Cuomo announced the reopening of movie theaters statewide at 25% capacity. This is an important step in bringing the arts back to our audiences.

With the health and safety of our community and staff in mind, we are taking a very cautious approach to reopening and our current plan is to resume regular cinema operations later this spring.

In the meantime, private rentals are still available and the Playhouse is continuing the development of an exciting lineup of virtual and outdoor programming as well as weekly takeout options from the Playhouse Café. Please be sure to follow us on our social media channels and our website for reopening news and new programming.

Thank you for standing by our side during these very difficult times. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Playhouse very soon!

Author Talk:  Eleanor, with David Michaelis, moderated by Playhouse Founder John Farr
Thursday, March 11, 7:30 pm

When David Michaelis met First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, he was four years old and couldn’t have known that he’d later devote 11 years to studying the great “white-haired lady.” Backstage at the WGBH-TV studio where his mother produced Eleanor’s show, Prospects of Mankind, he simply asked her for a stick of Juicy Fruit gum. Now with ELEANOR, prizewinning biographer David Michaelis pulls back the curtain and delves into Roosevelt’s inner life as never before with this revelatory, intimate, and bold new cradle-to-grave look at one of the 20th Century’s greatest figures.

ELEANOR chronicles not only the timeline of her life and achievements, such as guiding the drafting of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but gives us a universally relatable story of a great woman’s lifelong search for love. Michaelis has a lively cinematic style and the lengthy odyssey flies by, as many of the best biographies do, and reaffirms her as an epic perennial figure of democracy whom the world treasures.

Let’s Talk: How Much Should You be Worrying About Your Children’s Gaming?
Thursday, March 18, 7:00pm

Electronic gaming has become an increasingly popular pastime for children and adolescents, and with it come a series of parenting concerns and challenges. This has been especially true during the pandemic, when less social contact has meant, for some, more time with video games. How much should you be worrying about your gaming and your child? How much gaming is too much? What’s the best way to manage frequency and duration of gaming? What’s the secret to getting your child to transition peacefully when it’s time to turn off the games? This talk will provide information and practical strategies so you can feel more confident and comfortable with gaming habits of your children.

Hoping to retain his grip on power, 12th-century King Henry II (Peter O’Toole) summons his estranged, exiled wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), for a Christmas Eve meeting with their three sons, Richard the Lion-Hearted (Anthony Hopkins), Prince Geoffrey (John Castle), and Prince John (Nigel Terry), to determine who will succeed to the throne. As Henry and Eleanor lock in a vicious battle of words, the remaining family members — including Henry’s mistress Alais (Jane Merrow) and her teenage brother King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) — try to outmaneuver each other in their quest for dominance.
