Bridging the Gap Between Technology and the COVID-19 Vaccination for the Elderly

Five Eastern Connecticut State University students created a user-friendly website to help individuals schedule COVID-19 vaccination appointments.

Among the students is senior Leonard Vargas of Old Greenwich, who served as the instructional video creator. Vargas majors in Business Information Systems.

The students were mentored by Alex Citurs, professor of business information systems. The team was challenged by the changing CDC and Connecticut Department of Public Health web portals and documentation. They also needed to find a way to bridge the technology proficiency gap of some users, particularly senior citizens.

To create the vaccine appointment scheduling tool, Eastern’s BIS team adopted a “rapid agile project approach” to design, develop and launch the website quickly. The goal was to make the vaccination scheduling process clear, concise and logical for people not familiar navigating the Internet, and the children, grandchildren and friends trying to help them.

The project team started working in mid-January with the goal of streamlining and simplifying the vaccination appointment process. The students aligned their individual strengths to related project tasks. In addition to meeting several times a day during the week on Zoom, the team also met regularly with Professor Citurs and their client, Susan Starkey, director of the Northeast District of the Connecticut Department of Public Health.
