Town of Greenwich Ready to Respond to Christmas Storm

There won’t be a white Christmas this year, but there certainly will be a stormy one.

Heavy rain is forecast for Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, with two to four inches expected. The rain on top of snow and subsequent melting could cause flooding.

Strong winds are also in the forecast, as there is a high wind warning in effect from 6 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. Friday. Gusts could reach up to 65 mph, and could result in damaged or downed trees, limbs and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected.

But the Town of Greenwich is ready to respond, said First Selectman Fred Camillo in an update released Thursday afternoon.

“The Town has public safety, public works and parks crews on standby as does Eversource. All downed power lines should be considered live and avoided,” Camillo said.

Residents are reminded to check their property and clear areas so that water can freely flow away from houses. Storm water basins should also be dug out, and gutters checked.

Storm water must not be pumped into the Town’s sanitary sewer system. Not only is it illegal, but that activity can overwhelm the system and lead to overflow.

“The Department of Public Works worked throughout the Town’s roadway network to do the best that the staff can to have it ready for this storm.  However, intermittent flooding or ponding of water may occur with this storm, so please exercise caution when driving.  When you come upon standing water in the road, don’t drown, turn around,” Camillo said.

“Give anyone you see out working as a result of the weather a thumbs up if you can do so safely – they are out there trying to help those of us fortunate enough to remain at home during these challenging times!”
