Presiding Bishop Michael Curry is the titular head of the Episcopal Church in this country that counts nearly two million members. Elected in 2015, as then Bishop of North Carolina, Michael Curry is the first African American to serve as presiding bishop in The Episcopal Church. This Sunday, Bishop Curry is the guest speaker via zoom at the 11 a.m. Forum of Christ Church Greenwich.

Bishop Curry is to be interviewed by Christ Church parishioner and author Deborah Royce to discuss his new book, “Love is the Way: Holding onto Hope in Troubling Times.”
“What we will focus on in our conversation,” says Royce, “is basically what his wonderful new book is about. How do we find the way of love—the way of hope—in a time that seems so angry and fearful? What can we do to keep ourselves and others from descending into hopelessness and despair? How do we better talk to others, listen to others, help others get through this with us?”

Since Bishop Curry’s 2015 election he has presided over extraordinary circumstances of racial injustices. He is the descendant of enslaved Africans, and the son of the late civil rights activist Reverend Kenneth Curry.
“He takes us to dark times,” says Royce of author Curry, “in our collective past (specifically the struggles of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, the assassinations at that time of inspirational leaders, the anger that could have consumed everyone) and reminds us of how we came through them. He discusses the loss of his brilliant mathematician mother when he was only a child, and how a collection of loving family members, friends, and fellow parishioners put their arms around his family and helped them through it.”

In 2018, Bishop Curry received worldwide recognition when he delivered a sermon at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in London. In his sermon, “Discover the Power of Love,” he quoted Rev. Martin Luther King, and spoke about slavery, poverty, and the enduring power of love. He’s widely quoted for experiencing that day that he could, “feel slaves around the place…like their voice was somehow heard that day.”
Bishop Curry has authored numerous books, with his most recent being “Love is the Way.” An endorsement from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, reads, “ Drawing on his own life and experiences he [Bishop Curry] shows us that, time and again, when love is threatened by circumstances—be it poverty, racism, violence, injustice or the abuse of power—that same love has the power to shine through.”
