Old Greenwich School 5th Grader Nora Stern “made noise” for Greenwich Hospital workers, on behalf of her entire 5th Grade class.

Every year, the 5th Grade students at Old Greenwich School make a class gift to their school. This typically pays for an item to improve the school – perhaps a new bench, playground game, or a mural. This year, the children voted to donate their collection to a local organization working to help people affected by the coronavirus instead. The students chose Greenwich Hospital to be the recipient of this gift.

The OGS students voted to give their entire collection of $800 to Greenwich Hospital’s COVID-19 Support Funds, to help with capital expenses connected to the hospital’s efforts in treating patients with the coronavirus.

When asked why he voted to donate the gift to Greenwich Hospital, OGS student Blake Levy said, “I thought that since there have been many years where students have used the money for OGS, this year we could use it to help out where it comes to helping people with COVID-19. What motivated me is that I want the people with the disease to get better and I want social isolation to be over.” Classmate Rafa Rizzo agreed, saying, “I feel that hospitals need it more than we do right now.”

Another student, Olivia Leach, expressed a similar sentiment: “The people at the hospital are working so hard to help people who are sick and they are risking their lives. And I also want to help all those in the local community.” Many of our students recognize the shortage of supplies and hope their gift might help. Gabriela Gigliani said she wanted to give to Greenwich Hospital, “because during the epidemic hospitals are not having enough resources to save the lives of people who need help, and they can use money to protect healthcare workers and get more equipment.”

OGS Principal Jen Bencivengo said, “We are blessed by the generosity of our OGS 5th Grade students, as they so perfectly express what our entire school community feels right now – profound concern for people afflicted by this disease, immense respect for the frontline workers caring for them, and an ever present desire to come together to benefit others as one community. Our future is in excellent hands with these incredible young minds and their generous hearts.”

OGS PTA President Cristina Broderick said, “It is a privilege that the OGS 5th Graders have instructed us to direct these funds to Greenwich Hospital. The parent and teacher community shares our children’s concern for the doctors, nurses, and staff members at the hospital, as well as the patients they are treating. We all extend our thanks and best wishes to them.”
