As the world continues to navigate in these challenging times, Kids In Crisis remains a constant, 24-hour resource for children and families in Fairfield County. Trained Crisis Counselors continue to answer helpline calls around the clock, as families face difficult times. The helpline number is 203-661-1911.

Remaining committed to the health and well-being of everyone at Kids In Crisis during this Covid-19 crisis, administrative staff members are working remotely, and in-house shelter staff is limited to essential employees only.

“There is a huge reliance on technology with our kids in the shelter to foster distance learning, as well as aid in relaxation techniques such as engaging in online yoga classes”, said Shari Shapiro, Executive Director.

“Our TeenTalk counselors are still very much available, and students are reminded they can call our helpline 24 hours a day. Utilizing our new quality assurance system, counselors can remotely access helpline information daily, to check for student calls and respond accordingly.”

“While we have had to cancel our Lighthouse meetings for the time being, we are still reachable by email, lighthouse@kidsincrisis.org, and we will gladly set up a group call if anyone would like. We want the kids to know we are still here for them.”

Shapiro says they have received an outpouring of calls and support from the community, all offering to help. Gift cards and hot meals have been dropped off curbside, and they are being asked regularly what other assistance is needed.

“Unfortunately, we have had to postpone or cancel all of our fundraising events scheduled for May.  And that means that right now our greatest need is truly financial,” says Shapiro. “We recognize our dedicated donors and volunteers are also facing hardships, and the last thing we want to do is knock on their doors asking for funds, but we do want to remind people that we are here, and the need continues to grow.”

Kids In Crisis has a Wish List on their website (https://www.kidsincrisis.org/ways-to-give/wish-list/) of items they need, which they will continue to update. The community is also encouraged to follow Kids In Crisis’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/kidsincrisisct), for agency news, tips and ideas for things to do during these unusual times.
