According to the Greenwich Athletic Foundation,  a 501(c3) charitable foundation dedicated to the development of youth and high school sports in the Town of Greenwich, over 2,500 residents have signed a petition in support of renovating facilities at Greenwich High School’s Cardinal Stadium. The online petition was launched on Oct. 25.

“It’s great to see huge community support for Plan F to build a new beautiful, functional and safe Cardinal Field,” said Rob Burton, GAF’s Board President, in a written statement from GAF.  “This shows the wide and deep community desire to build something cost effective now instead of the proposed five-year, $20 million plan. Our kids can’t wait.”

The GAF has been advocating for the renovation of the 45-year-old stadium since the organization formed in 2017. Since then, the GAF has provided a new sound system, scoreboard and live streaming for all events in 2018 and 2019. In July, the GAF gifted an additional $100,000 to shore-up the once-closed bleachers at Cardinal Stadium for the 2019 fall season.

“After two years of study, we hope the Board of Education will hear the community and green-light this project immediately,” said Randy Caravella, GAF Treasurer, in the statement.  “Our generous members give time, treasure and tenacity to move forward youth sports in Greenwich. We ask elected town officials to move ahead with urgency.”
