Rep. Camillo’s Statement on Mooring Proposal

I am deeply troubled by the proposal to place a mooring for commercial construction barges off the coast of our beloved Greenwich Point. Our waterfront in Old Greenwich is one of the greatest public assets in our town and I vow to combat any venture that diminishes it. The environmental and public safety risks, in addition to the navigational and aesthetic problems, make this a poor choice of placement for the mooring. We cannot permit the over-commercialization of the Long Island Sound, one of our most important natural resources.

Because the mooring’s placement is technically in Stamford waters, right next to Greenwich, it will require we work with relevant Stamford municipal and state bodies, like Stamford Harbor Management Commission and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, that have influence in order to stop this proposal.

As a state Representative for eastern Greenwich, bordering Stamford, for six terms, I have good relationships with state and Stamford officials, and I will do everything I can to aid in this effort to protect Greenwich Point. I have already begun having conversations to learn as much as I can about the situation and will release more information as it comes.

Meanwhile, I encourage the public to follow the lead of the Greenwich Point Conservancy and stay informed and vocal about our town’s concerns and objections. Together we can protect Greenwich Point.

Fred Camillo is a State Representative and candidate for First Selectman
