Cynthia Luo, a resident of Cos Cob, was awarded the Karen Cooper Memorial Scholarship for her essay on her educational goals.

A recent graduate of Harvard University, Cynthia started medical school in July at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

This year, more than 10,000 students competed for 178 scholarship awards at the local, regional, national, and international levels with a combined value of more than $130,000.

The Mensa Foundation supports and celebrates the work of intelligent people through its scholarships, awards program, and gifted youth outreach. U.S. applicants need not be Mensa members. The local scholarship coordinator is Darcy Sledge, a Board Member of Southern Connecticut Mensa, which is based in Fairfield County. The Foundation’s scholarship program bases its awards totally on a short essay written by the applicants. There are no requirements for grades, academic program or financial need.
