Whitby School held its annual Mayfair Celebration Saturday, May 18. On an afternoon that featured the traditional Maypole dance, rides and food trucks, members of the Whitby community generously donated $43,000 to the school’s annual fund, which triggered a $25,000 match donated anonymously bringing the grand total of gifts given that day to $68,000.

In addition, Whitby commemorated its pond’s newly attained status as a certified Audubon Schoolyard Habitat with a ribbon cutting, featuring remarks by Ted Gilman, senior naturalist at Audubon Greenwich and Alexis Ryan, Librarian and Media/Makerspace Specialist at Whitby School. The Audubon Schoolyard Habitat program is a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that develops healthy schoolyard habitats for both children and wildlife. It will promote environmental education into the school curriculum. The occasion by the pond also included demonstrations by representatives of the Backyard Beekeepers Association and the Greenwich Botanical Center.
