Eversource is investing $50 million in electric distribution system upgrades throughout the Town of Greenwich.

Enhancement projects include replacing more than 400 utility poles with stronger, thicker ones and installing more than 20 miles of new underground cable and overhead wire. According to Eversource, the new lines will add redundancy to the electric system, enabling the utility company to more quickly re-route power, reducing the frequency and length of outages, should they occur.

“We’re always working to serve our customers better and that means doing what’s needed to ensure they have the energy needed to run their businesses and live their lives,” said Eversource President of Regional Electric Operations Craig Hailstorm, in a press release. “This is a significant investment that when completed, will result in an even stronger, more resilient electric grid that will reliably serve more than 28,000 Greenwich customers well into the future.”

Work is already underway in many parts of town. New overhead lines and utility poles are being installed along West Putnam Avenue (between Pemberwick Road and the Jeep dealership); Weaver Street (from Chapel Street to Glenville Road); Glenville Road (between Weaver Street and Riversville Road) and Riversville Road (from Glenville Road to Hardscrabble Road).

The projects are expected to be complete by late 2020. Eversource noted that this work is separate from the Greenwich Substation and Line project, which includes a new 115-kilovolt electric transmission line being installed on the south side of town and a new substation being built on Railroad Avenue later in 2019.

Work related to the line/substation project began in the vicinity of Exit 4 (Indian Field Road/Cos Cob) on I-95 earlier this week. Weather permitting, work will take place Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Drivers can expect possible delays beginning the week of June 17 through the end of October.

This work will be done at night and may require an occasional lane closure along the highway near Exit 4 as well as the sporadic closing of the northbound or southbound Exit 4 ramp. All Exit 4 on and off-ramps will not be closed at the same time.
