Local Scouts Help Bring Back the Poppy this Memorial Day

Every year local Scouts assemble thousands of poppy cards for the Greenwich Town Party.

“We call it poppy production,” said Emilia Schiro, Greenwich Council Events Manager. “The Scouts get together for pizza and poppies each year and we create a mass assembly line at camp.”

The postcards have information about the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Connecticut and a have a “Buddy” poppy attached. The poppy is the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

“I received a poppy from one of my clients years ago,” said Michael Freeburg, President of Greenwich Wealth Management. “I started giving them to my friends, family and colleagues each year for Memorial Day.”

Freeburg’s company, one of the founding sponsors of the GTP, donates the poppies and cards each year. “Soon 25 turned into 2,500 and now 8,000 with the support of the Greenwich Town Party,” he said.

“We truly appreciate all that Michael and his company do for our Veterans,” said Scot Weicker, the event planner for the GTP.

To date, Freeburg has purchased more than 50,000 “Buddy” poppies from the VFW thanks to the partnership with the GTP. The poppies are assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals. Proceeds from the sales supports the Veterans Needs Fund which offers immediate assistance to Veterans and their families.

“The poppy is more of a sentiment. It recognizes the men and women who gave their lives to protect our freedoms and liberties,” said Freeburg. “Our Veterans have sacrificed so much, we are honored to support them.”

Members of the CT VFW and Greenwich Scouts will be at the GTP this Saturday, May 25 handing out poppy cards.
