The Greenwich Library Peterson Concert Series continues on Sunday, March 24 at 4 p.m. with Patricia Barber Trio.

From her early days leading a jazz trio in small Chicago nightclubs, Barber has drawn accolades for her unique arrangements and composed piano improvisations. She later added vocals to her repertoire, redefining the role of a singer-songwriter for 21st-century jazz audience.

Born in the Chicago suburbs, Barber came by music naturally. Her father was Floyd “Shim” Barber, a saxophonist who had worked with Glenn Miller’s orchestra. She began playing classical piano at the age of 6 and eventually decided to follow in her father’s path. Her reputation spread beyond Chicago, spurred by enthusiastic responses to performances at the Chicago Jazz Festival (1988) and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands (1989), culminating in her major label debut (A Distortion Of Love) in 1992.

In 2002, Barber moved into an exclusive contract with Blue Note, recording three albums, including Mythologies, a genre-blending work based on the writings of the ancient Roman poet Ovid; the project was supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship in composition (the first ever awarded to a non-classical songwriter). As she continues to perform and record, Barber proves that her poetry searches ever deeper, even as her music grows all the more magical.

Barber is accompanied by Patrick Mulcahy on bass and Jon Deitemyer on drums. The Peterson Concert Series is open to all at no charge through the support of the Greenwich Library Board of Trustees and generous donors. Doors open at 3:15. Registration, using the Library’s online calendar, greenwichlibrary.org, is required.
