The morning snow on Saturday put a damper on Greenwich Scouting’s annual food drive to benefit Neighbor to Neighbor. Scouts were unable to set up outside grocery stores and many collection bags were not left outside homes because of the snow accumulation.
“Unfortunately, the weather plays a huge part in the success of this event,” said Heather Brown, Program Director for the Greenwich Council, BSA. “We get most of our donations from people out shopping and the snow cleared a little too late for us on Saturday.” Brown is hoping those who support this town-wide good turn each year will bring food to Neighbor to Neighbor this week or donate fresh fruits and vegetables through the online campaign at ampyourgood.com/user/campaigns/3247
Neighbor to Neighbor is located at: Christ Church Annex, 248 East Putnam Ave.
Hours are: Monday through Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays: 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Since its inception in 1912, Greenwich Scouting goals have remained the same, emphasizing youth adventure, leadership, learning, outdoor exploration, and perhaps most importantly, service. Scouts are encouraged to “Do a Good Turn Daily”. Greenwich Scouting partners with Neighbor to Neighbor, located at Christ Church in Greenwich, to help fill the increasing need for food for families in the area, especially during non-holiday times, such as March. Neighbor to Neighbor provides nutritious meals monthly for over 660 local families through their “Client Choice” food pantry, where clients actually have the opportunity to do their own shopping. Approximately 47% of the food provided by Neighbor to Neighbor feeds children at or below the poverty level.
